Although Robert at Vintage Trailer Shop has a replica of my window backframe gasket in the works, it could be several months until it's done. He sent a potential substitute which I haven't had the chance to test yet. But while I'm waiting to do that I was wondering how important the backframe gaskets are. (I'm talking about the one that is attached to the very outer edge of the window frame and butts up against the skin.) I plan on using putty tape between the skin and the window. So what role do the gaskets play?

Back frame gaskets also seal the window to the frame. The back half isn't as important as the moving window seal. So yes, you need them. I use Tacky Tape (Schnee Morehead) 1/16 x 1/2 behind the gasket (skin side) in all cases.

Ok, good to know, vikx. Thanks for the advice. I did put on the test gasket last night and see what you're talking about. The old gaskets on my windows that still have them are so hard they're pretty much pointless. I didn't realize the new stuff would be floppy and pliable

Floppy and pliable is a good thing...

I'd love to see a photo! Poquito What would you like to see, poquito? This is a pic of the old gasket which shrunk below the corners. I can get a shot of this stiff one next to the pliable new one.
