I purchased a 1970 shasta starflyte 17' from out of state and need to buy a spare tire and wheel. the tire size is p215 75r 14. the old owner sent me a pic but its not measured from the exact correct location and its difficult to see. I was expecting the wheel size to be 14" 5 x 4.5 lug pattern. from the picture it doesn't appear anywhere near that. Does anyone know the correct lug patter? I would greatly appreciate any help. i tried adding a picture, but not sure if it worked.

That's a huge tire size for a Starflyte. I don't suggest buying anything until you are THERE. Seriously, there's always a tire shop within reach. If it has good tires??? no reason to worry about a spare until you get there.
Most of my larger trailers have 205/75R/14 or 15s.
Hope this helps.

I have a 1970 Starflyte and put new tires on it a last year. I also picked up a spare rim, so I now carry a spare when needed.
I can't remember the actual size of the rim or tire. I can get all that info when I get home from work....about 4:00pm EST.
I do remember that the rim size was that of a 1965 Ford Mustang. The back set was important, because I was matching what was on the trailer. That took several months to track one down....didn't want to pay a fortune for it.

We have ST 205/75 R14 tires on Ford rims, with a 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern and a 4" backspace. The backspacing is critical. If the rim isn't set back far enough into the wheel well, the tire either will not fit into wheel well or will rub.
You can find Ford and Mopar steel rims with this same pattern and backspacing. Mid 60's - early 70's, Shasta 16SC's and the 17' Starflyte's ran on the Ford rims, 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern with the 4" backspace.
BUT, before you run out and pick up anything, double check your setup.
Hope this helps.

thanks for the great info! you sparked an idea. i think this is what i will do. i will purchase 2 new tires prior to leaving to pickup my camper that will fit my existing rims and have them replaced in the city where i'm picking up the trailer. that way all i have to worry about is the very unusual blowout of a new tire; thus giving me some insurance while not having to take a chance purchasing the wrong size spare. i will worry about a spare when i start the restoration.

I know this is an older thread, but I can't seem to find much info on what wheel I need for my 68 Starflyte. From reading above posts, would I need to get a 65 mustang wheel with the 4" backspacing? I feel like Im playing russian roulette, towing this trailer without a spare. What other wheels would fit? I was going to make a trip to the junkyard, but not even sure if they would have something that would fit

flameout It should be the same as the 65 Ford rim, but to be safe, pull one of your Starflyte wheels off and double check the size and backspace.

Those old ford wheels are expensive. Too bad old chevy wheels dont fit. I have quite a few of those 😊 I did find this on etrailer though, which might be what I need www.etrailer.com/Tires-and-Wheels/Dexstar/AM20304.html

I think that I once looked at those, but they were still too expensive for me. I went to my auto mechanics and one of the employees had one. Picked it up for a couple beers! Didn't know if you read this, but here is the back spacing info: What is backspacing, in inches, of the following wheel: Dexstar Tires and Wheels - AM20304 asked by: Monte A Helpful Expert Reply: The backspacing of Dexstar Conventional Steel Wheel with Offset # AM20304 is 3-3/4-inches. I ended up ordering 2 of those wheels. Even though mine might be ok, they had a lot of rust, so not sure if that affected their integrity

If you go to a junk yard for ford wheels remember that fords smaller cars had four lugs on models with small motors but most V8 cars were 4 1/2"pattern with five lugs.
