OK I'm finally ready to tackle this old girl. She's been sitting out in the fence row with the rest of the junk for 3 years. After getting her home and finding out what we had gotten ourselves into she was parked in discouragement. I've spent hours and hours watching Mobiltec's videos and hours reading stories, experiences and advice on this fabulous site and I've finally worked up enough courage and feel like I have just enough knowledge to start taking out some screws in the windows and start the process. The more lipstick I peel off this pig, the scarier it gets! I don't know how we got her home without killing somebody! We did several things wrong right off the bat - bought a travel trailer without having any idea what we were looking for, spent way too much money, started tearing things out when we got home and realized there was some rot (I wish there was just SOME!). I'll be surprised if there is 50% that ISN'T rotten!! Anyway, thankfully we stopped when we realized this was a can of worms and we had no idea what we were doing.
SO I've started the process of removing the windows. This is going to be an ordeal in itself. Everything on the outside of this trailer is held together with putty tape which is still VERY sticky, silicone caulk, gobs of paint, and either screws, twisty nails or rivets. Also the screws are rusted and just strip out with any kind pressure from a screwdriver. So the first day was very frustrating. Thankfully I got some good advice from Mobiltec on getting screws out - beat on all sides of the head (of screw ) with a flat head screwdriver and hammer and then use vise grips to get them twisted out far enough to be able to clamp on and get them out. Thanks Larry! You're a ROCKSTAR! So I've gotten the screws out of the windows and eyebrows off of one side. I really don't know how I'm gonna get the windows out with all that putty tape, etc. It was difficult getting the eyebrows off. I'm thinking I should have started with a smaller, less damaged trailer to learn on before tackling this!
I did contact Hemet Valley RV to get a quote for new siding. Centuries were originally not painted. Also my siding is a little beat up and I will definitely need a new roof. I don't know what I'm gonna do yet. New siding is not in the budget at this point, I will have to do something with my siding if we reuse it (paint, strip ?), and also Steve cannot get the pattern of my siding which is like an accordion fold. And he told me that my trailer was one of the most complicated he's ever quoted so that's neat. 3 pieces from top to bottom and 3 from front to back, so 9 pieces of siding on each side. Anyway, VERY long post to start this ball rolling. Hopefully I can get pics on here so you get the picture
Vikx maybe you can move this thread to the Vintage Restorations page?.......please?
