I am still in the wood fixing process of my restoration but trying to figure out what is going back in so I can make appropriate changes to the framing.
I have not tested the original water heater, but the water that came out of the original water heater was nasty. There was also lot of mildew / condensation damage to the shelf just above the water heater. All that said, I am looking to go with a new one.
I was originally looking at just going with a 6 gallon Atwood, but a deal has popped up for a 10 gallon Exothermal Atwood. The price is just 150! The guy said he bought it to put in his motorcoach and then decided to go with some flameless diesel hot water heater instead. It was installed and then removed, but never actually used. It seems to check out, the manufacture date is less than a year ago.
So question numero uno is family of five, will a 10 gallon water heater be overkill? We live coastal and plan to have an outside shower to rinse off after the beach.
Question two, does anyone have any experience with exothermal versions of the Atwood heaters?

I don't think a 10 gallon is overkill for a family of 5, with an outside shower, at the beach. Here is the one mobiltec put in my trailer - Atwood Mobile Products 94191 Electronic Direct Spark Ignition Water Heater - 10 Gallon I haven't used it yet though, so I can't speak as to whether or not it is good.

This is the same water heater that is in my friend's motor home and I have use his shower when camping. It's great.
