I have just acquired an awesome 1957 Shasta trailer, I am starting my repairs and saw that under the carpet were, I think, the original floor tiles. Does anyone know if these tiles are asbestos?? I'll have a ton more questions as I go on, but I'll start with this one ... Thanks

If there is asbestos, it could be in either the tile or the adhesive. Asbestos is dangerous only if it is inhaled. With Hamlet, we just assumed it was there and acted accordingly. It's a very small area, so with excellent ventilation, keeping the surface damp and using a really good respirator mask, it shouldn't be a problem. Except if you already have respiratory issues or live in an area wil poor air quality. Then you can just lay new flooring over the old with a 1/8 inch layer of plywood over the old flo or as a base. Just remember, though, that it will take away that much headroom in side the camper. Or have an asbestos abatement company do it for you.

I understood from these forums that if the original tiles were 9" x 9" that they were asbestos.

I'm late, but both of the 57s here had sheet Marmoleum... So did 58s have tiles?

This 58 has tile, and from what I can tell they are original.
