Hi all!
I love that this forum is all about people helping people because that is how I have come to be the future owner of a Shasta Astrodome, year TBD.
Two weeks ago I was helping my former boss and all around good guy build and roof a 8x10 shed. As I'm sitting on the roof, waiting for him to cut a shingle I spot his neighbors Shasta compact and mention what a sweet piece of americana it is. He responds by asking if I want one... I hesitate, but only for a second. ABSOLUTELY!
Not knowing what I've gotten myself into I start asking questions. Find out it's got the upper sleeper and a toilet... thus the shasta astrodome. Turns out the grandkids have been sleeping in it as recently as a couple years ago. However the kiddies stopped sleeping in the Shasta after a they found bats (who were also sleeping in the Shasta). At that time the door was shut and has never since been opened... thus the BatDome.
I've seen pics of the exterior and it looks in pretty good shape accept for the expected grime, some mold and some rust from the screws and corrosive metal parts. My understanding is that hit hasn't moved for 30 - 40 years. Couple dents but nothing major. Hoping the inside is in as good of condition as the exterior.
I go to pick it up the first weekend in Sept. and will be looking for advise on whether to restore or retire... Either way I'm very excited to see, take home and potentially resort this once love camper to its original glory.
I will gladly post pics but not sure how (I have a mac if that makes a difference). When I hit the button to attach a pic the window only provides a url field. Does this mean that I have to post them on-line first?

Welcome ShastaBatDome! May we call you Bat in the future??
Anything can be fixed! We are all here for you. Can't wait for pix! Yes, post them on Photobucket or similar before linking here. We all learned the hard way that attached photos aren't good on a forum. They can all disappear in an instant...

Wow what a score!!! CONGRATS We too got one for free and our looks exactly the same but no bathroom so it is an Astroflyte with the gaucho bed across the back... We go it in april and have already rebuild the rear, the front and removed the roof to re-panel the ceiling. Oh and removed old floor and replaced with new VCT. My boyfriend just rebuild the guacho to accommodate an under bed AC and the new mattress arrives today. If you have any questions feel free to reach out..My boyfriend has tons of pictures on Facebook. Below is a link to our camper with her top popped... we are on a limited budget and only replace what really needed to be replaced but it is looking good s1367.photobucket.com/user/ndpap/media/popthetop_zps89f2ac8d.jpg.html?sort=3&o=1Nancy

Congrats! Now sit down and take a deep breath. There WILL be rot. when you start with a 'minor fixup' you will keep finding things to replace/repair/update, so if you are mentally prepared for a major project, you will not get overwhelmed. There is an infinite amount of knowledge and help available on this forum, so you've got that covered already. Best of luck with your new Batcave!

Before towing it anywhere, repack the wheel bearings, check the frame and axles and spring attachments, the tires, the lights, the hitch and safety chains, and thoroughly check the bottoms of the walls for rot. You don't want the whole box to sag down around the frame from the bumps making the rotten wood give way... Installing some floor-to-ceiling T-supports inside can add to the safety of towing an unknown trailer home. You can see what I mean here: vintagetrailertalk.freeforums.net/thread/173/worst-experienceCan't see the front because of the trash cans, but a lot of times you can see the skin sagging/wrinkling down over the tongue from the wooden frame rotting underneath. The skin looks very straight in the pics though, which is a good sign. Although if it's been parked for so long, it really hasn't had any stress put to it, and might just be waiting for the first speed bump to collapse. It would be a shame to damage that skin. Good luck! For pics, use the "reply" button, not "quick reply", and above the body you'll see a tiny picture icon. When you click on it, the URL box will open. On Photobucket, you have to open one particular photo, then go to the right and click on "IMG". The box will briefly say "copied" as the IMG coed is copied to your clipboard. Then come back here and paste it into your message body. It will go wherever your cursor is sitting. You can paste as many links into one post as you want, with descriptions between them, if you pay attention to where your cursor is. In other words, write your photo description, then hit "return" to put the cursor in the next line, then paste the link.
