I guess I really don't know where to post this thread so please move it or let me know. My wife and I are on the final "bits" of a pretty major rebuild of our 64 1500. All skin was removed, most framing was replaced, all but one piece of 1/8 plywood was replaced, 3/4 inch foam filled every wall cavity. Then all lighting was replaced with 12 volt LEDs and all 110 outlets and wiring was replaced with #12. New running lights and wires along with brake rebuild. New tile floor was placed on new plywood and new counter tops along with new cushions, upholstery and curtains. Turquoise and white paint and a polished strip now awaits the replacement of the windows and trim.
So, here is my question! We are ready to head out this fall. We have a son and daughter in law in New Orleans and a son and daughter in law in Oakland. We figure NO first then through the south along the coast to Oakland and home through the south to avoid the mountain snows. Has anyone traveled along this route and could you advise on some great places to camp and sights to see. Just retired and not really looking at time constraints. I would love to hear from anyone with personal experiences.
Mark

I cannot help you with campgrounds but keep your eyes open driving through AZ & New Mexico. You will not believe all the old campers. Enjoy your travels!

I've traveled I-40 too many times to count: Calif border to Nashville. We rarely camped because of the horses, but there are a few things I know about the roads on I-40/Route 66. I-10 in the middle of winter would be a better choice.
Late Summer and Fall can mean BIG RAINS in Arizona and New Mexico. So big you can't see the freeway. Oklahoma can be very windy and has interesting hills. Spectacular thunderstorms can happen anywhere, along with a lightning show. The heat is hard on vehicles and tires. Be sure you have a transmission cooler and an adequate radiator.
Winter is actually an easier trip. Snow in Flagstaff, Oklahoma and Texas. Drive-able but slow. Black ice on bridges.
Folks love to stop by the Grand Canyon if you go that way. And there's some cool reptile sanctuaries and Native American gift shops along the way. Too much FUN!! Oh, and don't miss the old/new Burma Shave signs...
Please keep us posted on your travels!

Mark, I planned a road trip for my mom and me from Texas to Mt. Rushmore and beyond this summer using a website called Roadtrippers (www.roadtrippers.com). You put in your start and end locations, and it tells you best route, distance and time, for starters; then you begin adding what you want it to find, such as roadside attractions, campgrounds, restaurants, lodging, quirky Americana--it was the coolest thing ever. It might help you along the way, as campgrounds and RV parks are some of the search criteria you can check. We found some sights along the way that we would never have heard of otherwise. Check it out!

Hey when you get to Oakland, send me a pm, would love to connect with you and your trailer. Roadtrippers sounds wonderful! I have not traveled the far south route, but have done 40 a couple of times. There's plenty of campgrounds and they should be open and not full this time of year. Look for BLM and national forest spots once you are into New Mexico and further west....they are free or less than $20 a nite if you don't need electric etc...

Many thanks to each of you. I have heard that the rains are unbelievable to be in. The dust storms have also made the news lately. Travelaine I will look into the roadtripper site. Gonekayaking, are you in Oakland? Have you ever camped the redwoods or Humbolt area? We would love to see sequoia and redwood forests.

Yes I live in Oakland and would love to connect with you when you are out here. My suggestion for camping in the redwoods in the fall near the bay area are Big Basin, Butano State Park, Samuel P Taylor Park.
Further north any of the state parks in the redwoods are lovely Patricks Point, Jedidiah Smith, Richardson Grove, and Redwood National Park are all lovely. You pretty much can't go wrong.
To see Sequoias I would suggest Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Park. They are both well south of the devastating and still growing Rim Fire which has consumed 200K acres/300 square miles in and near Yosemite and the surrounding national forest and some of the giant Sequoia groves are threatened and closed to vehicles probably until winter at this point.

In the 60,s a car load of us sailors drove from New Londen to San Deigo on Route 66. I understand that the flare is comming back. Not freeway speeds but a great road trip.

When we were traveling West, a lot of I-40 was also labeled Rte 66. We lost it somewhere near Oklahoma City, if I remember correctly. Finding all the original pieces would be a blast....

Yes I think I suggested Big Basin....that is slightly inland in the Santa Cruz MOuntains....lots of redwoods. There's a great scale railroad back there too called the Roaring Camp. and of course the surfing beaches and boardwalk down by the ocean. Lived in Aptos when I was in college for a couple of years....New Brighton Beach and Seacliff both I think have camping. You can also go down a bit farther and camp at Sunset STate beach and then down by Big Sur Andrew Molera or Julia Pffiefer Big Sur.....Mid week should be clear sailing for camping but weekends through october may be difficult, this is the best time of the year on the coast!

gonekayaking I have been to the Roaring Railroad and actually enjoyed it greatly. Banana Slugs all around! I guess I would go back again. I am not a surfer but would like to see the beaches and the ocean, but the redwoods, beautiful! Mark
