My wife and I bought a '63 Deluxe for parts and are now considering a possible redo. I've never attempted to peel the skins back before but thought this would be the perfect time. I removed all the screws in the J channel, pulled it back and found small nails between every screw hole. Is this standard or something someone did later? Any advice on removal?
Thanks, Jerry

So you mean under the j-rail, where the top skin was bent over the side skin, it is nailed down? Yes, that's standard. It's also standard to use about 6 billion nails to do it. Also, once you pull the nails for the skin overlapping the sides, there will most likely be 6 billion MORE nails holding the side skins down. But the upside is that you'll be a pro at nail-removal once you're finished!

Better than trying to pull out the skinny staples that held mine on.

Also, be sure to straighten the bent edge before moving the front/rear/roof metal. It causes the metal to split if you move it without straightening the edge...

After all new curbing is installed I staple it using 1/4 x 3/4 staples with an air gun.

So when the skin goes back on, do you re-staple/nail or ? Depends on the trailer: On mid 60s units, I staple with 1/4 x 1/2 18 ga. They hold well, but the nail gun should be set so that the staples don't go thru the aluminum. On older canned hams (50s), I use stainless 7/8 x #17 nails. Just don't want the staple dimples in that cool old aircraft aluminum. I predrill the metal with a 1/16 bit, not into the wood.

Ughhh, so any tips to make the nail removal easier and less of a pain in the... Not that I know of, but after 100 or so you'll get into a rhythm and it will start to go faster. I mostly used pliers and a screwdriver, just be careful not to tear your skin.

Very small Cat's Paw you can get at Home Depot. Other than that, it's a PITA... But you get better at it as you go. About the time you have it down, you're finished...
