Here we go... "Carpenter ants DO NOT eat wood. They remove wood as they create galleries and tunnels."
"Carpenter ants may also nest in foam insulation."
"Sound detection may be helpful in locating a nest. An active colony may make a dry, rustling sound that becomes louder if the colony is disturbed. This sound, thought to be a form of communication, is made with the mandibles (jaws) and is not related to wood chewing. When trying to detect carpenter ants, tap the suspected area and then press an ear to the surface in order to hear any sound."Here's a link... www1.extension.umn.edu/garden/insects/find/carpenter-ants/

I've read that they usually make their main nest in old rotted logs and stumps, and make satellite nests elsewhere, like campers and houses, and that they will forage up to 100 yards away from their nests. And that they remain in communication with the satellite nests, so often bait will be brought back to kill the main nest.
I think I've won. When I got to the camper Friday I found about 30 or so dead ones, from the Home Defense spray I used the last two weekends. I put bait around outside the camper and never drew a single ant to it, and only lured four or five with it inside. I think they will do in the remaining ones inside when they bring it back to the nest. And no chewing noises!

Good to know. Seems I won using Home Defense as well and I didn't even know what I was doing then. I saw where they were coming out from and I soaked the inside of the hole abotu 10 different times. We'll see this spring.
Sounds like ya got em though if you don't hear the noise anymore. I gotta tell ya I was starting to think you were hearing things until I read up on them and found out that one of the ways to locate the nest was by listening for them. LOL!
