I contacted a local spring shop. They quoted me $400 to completely restore my old springs or $250 for new. What have you paid to have this work done?

I paid $250 labor to have new springs put on mine. I supplied the springs, I think they were about $30 a piece.

I pay about $120 per spring pack custom built to fit what's there and that includes new shackles and all the bolts and nuts and greasable bushings..... I just bring them the measurements. eye to eye and height in the middle from the center of the eyes line to the axle point.

Well I don't think $400 for two spring packs and all the hardware and labor is bad at all. Especially when THEY are carrying the liability and not YOU.

For me it comes down to two things. Time and am I enjoying the work. On one of my campers I spent days talking with old time spring shops, Truck spring shops, people who rebuilt springs, etc. Eventually I found an old timer, who had been doing tractor trailer springs for a half century, willing and able to do it. Could I have rebuilt this odd size spring? Maybe. Could I get the work done in one day? No way. Would I have enjoyed the work? Not really. I've done a lot of knuckle buster work on cars but I can't say I've enjoyed it. $250 in labor well spent.

Hi Friends,
I think NCcamper makes some good points about time and enjoying the work.
For me, I liked pulling apart the springs, the research behind how to do it, and then cleaning it all up to look pretty and the best of all to have it work like new. That's one of my main reasons for doing it myself.
It is nice though, to have something like this done in a day and pick it up the next. No denying that. Money governs a lot of what I do, so, I try to do as much as I can myself.
Cheers,
Rod

Northern Tool sells replacement trailer axle parts. If you have tools it is easy to do it yourself. If everything is rusted buy a can of Kroll rust remover.
www.google.com/webhp#q=kroll+rust+remover&tbm=shop
Better than kroll is Muriatic Acid and a small paint brush. Be sure to rinse with too much water.

My leaf spring/electric brake guy wants me to remove the whole axle and bring it to his shop. Is that what you all have done? Or have you just removed the relevant parts?
The trailer is down to the wooden frame now, so if I have to bring in the whole axle I assume it's better to jack it now when it's light.

Everyone I've talked to about mine has asked for at least half the axle, but that person then turned around and said it would be easier to bring the whole thing minus wheels and tires of course. And the most I've been quoted was $300 for the whole shebang, no way would I pay $400 for just the springs. This isn't installed on the frame mind you, but that is the easy part. I'd shop around some more and don't settle for just trailer places, the one I ended up choosing does all different types of axles and wheels, but doesn't do the installation, just the building.
