I have seen people getting foam mattresses they like, but am looking to replace the firm coil mattress and box spring set that was in my '55 Kenskill bedroom. Has anyone had to source a 48" x 72" mattress set? There are six wooden legs that screwed into the bottom of the box spring. My best bet locally is Sleep City. They have a supplier (Englander) who will take one of their standard size mattresses and "chop" it down to size in the factory, but there is an extra ~$100ish charge to finish the two chopped edges, so a firmish Euro-Top 48" x 72" mattress comes to $559 + $99 for the spring. Have found some online for more: www.us-mattress.com/corsicana-8305-f.html but can't imagine paying so much for a mattress I haven't laid on, so wondered if anyone here had personal experience with a small mattress they love... Thank you! Jenny

I found this company that realizes that a 48"X72" mattress is an "antique" size. They have the mattress with no box...not cheap but a nicely finished mattress I believe. www.michigandiscountmattress.com/antique_mattress_sizes_custom_made.php...or depending on how thick you want it, you could buy 4 sheets of this (approx. $160) and take them to an auto or boat cushion upholsterer and see how much they would charge to "glue the pieces together to make an 8" thick 48X72" foam pad, and either have them cover it, or make a cover for it yourself. Got to be less than the one in the thread I posted above. Or buy the glue yourself shown in this ad and glue them together yourself and make a mattress cover for the least expensive solution. www.amazon.com/FABRIC-EMPIRE-Foam-Sheet-24/dp/B0058KFUHA

I'm trying something different. I bought a full size memory foam mattress from Walmart on sale for $150. I plan to open the casing on the side and cut the mattress to the right size then resew the casing to fit.

You might want to check with a boat cushion pro, and see what s/he would charge to open the cover and cut it down with their professional cutting tool and then do a quick re-stitch. Might be worth letting the pro do it for a small amount...rip...cut...sew. Probably take less than 30 minutes.
