We went down the "redneck" road as mobiltec calls it. 
It was a temporary awning just to get something up until we saved for a nicer one, but we never made the upgrade. We started to notice that our awning, and the awnings of our family and friends takes a beating. Bird poo, embers from fires, tree sap, branches falling on them, etc.... I will admit it doesn't look as good as the nice expensive ones, but I don't get upset when a large coal lands on it and burns a hole on it.
We just sewed in a piece of coax cable on one end for attachment to the camper and a pole in each corner with 2 ropes anchored per pole.
If it helps with the RedneckI factor we bought a colored tarp instead of the standard blue.....
