Went out to the '62 Shasta this morning and the door was locked. So I got the key and unlocked it, which actually "locked" it. Then I realized it was locked from the inside. When it is locked from the inside, the key will not unlock it from the outside. So now, I'm going to try to take my handle off (which I don't like to do because I worry about the screws getting a good bite, I'll probably need to fill the holes before I re-install it.). But I don't know if I can get it unlocked by removing the handle. I'll get back with you on that one!
P.S. My son did it. That's what I get for sending HIM out to get the dirty clothes bag. Thank goodness this didn't happen on our trip. I did notice on my '65 that the PO had added a screw to keep the internal lock lever in place in the unlocked position.

I DID IT! I took the heavy duty screw hook out of the end of my rubber mallet and bent the hook open so that it had just enough curve to fit through the hole and it was actually easy to pull catch back enough to open it. Whew! I thought I was going to have take a window out!

Happens all the time. Here is the warning I posted last year: If you have this style lock, you can easily get locked out. To avoid this, keep something (we use a small s-hook) through the hole to keep it from accidentally flipping into the locked position. The exterior key lock works independently and will not unlock the interior lock. When you want to lock it from the inside just remove the s-hook but remember to put it back in! A couple people we know had this happen and they had to find a child small enough to crawl through the cargo door or remove a window to climb through. cdn3.volusion.com/wckp9.3xkgs/v/vspfiles/photos/VTS-215-2.jpg?1397557567

@callie65 I remember reading your post but I obviously didn't put anything in it for safety. I was cautious and kept a check on it but I should have heeded your warning and put something in it. Not sure how the boy managed to lock it. He probably bumped it unknowingly. I forgot about the baggage compartment. I'd have to hunt a neighborhood kid down for that.
