We've only done two rallys, but I can see our stairs are not enjoying the volume and weight of different folks touring for hours at at time and would like to find a "vintage" solution, or something that looks halfway decent and can handle around 400 lls (yes, 400; the last tour I gave, a larger gentleman didn't want to try getting through the door and just kinda bounced around on my stair - thought I was gonna come undone). Any suggestions, photos?

I have one that was with my Compact, the PO let me take it, since there is not any step on the Compact. It was made of 2X8's, and had a step tread on it. Pretty simple construction, cheap enough to put together, and put down instead of the Shasta step for traffic like at rallies.

Someone listed this on the old site. Not sure who or how to contact.

I was lucky, I found a vintage stepstool exactly the right height and size, at an estate auction. It's almost exactly the same color as the interior birch, and get this: the legs on the stool are the same shape as the Shasta's wooden table leg! What are the chances of that happening?

I believe VTT forum member "portajohn" built the double step shown above, but not positive. But check this out! Found this on the web, looks like Shasta built wood boxes, with Shasta logo on them, to use at their trailer sales shows. Guess that answers my question about whether or not Compacts came with fold out steps. The pic is pretty bad but you get the idea. We are going to build one like that for our son's Compact, looks like just a box with skid proof stuff, or carpet, on top and a Shasta decal on the front, box painted to match trailer.

I kept an open mind and went garage sale-ing. I found several wooden boxes, one which I bought. I might cut a mat down and screw it on top.

How about having some aluminum legs made for the bottom of the original step, so the weight isn't on the step itself, and they'd be unnoticeable?

We use an old drawer that has a hinged top that my wife made from three boards. Also works well as a place to store a few items when camping. We sometimes use the Coca-Cola crates as props, but a couple of those could be converted for step duty pretty easily also. 1963 Shasta Airflyte by dwstucke, on Flickr

Ahh, I really like the hinged drawer idea! Hmm! Recently we have used an aluminum coca-cola bucket- upside down, or a plastic crate (which was used as a transport bin on the ride over to our destination).

Holy Poop!!! That pic is awesome! And its frightening as well because I made a wood step that fits right inside my back storage compartment. Put a piano hinge on the top acting as a lid, put rope handles on the sides, painted it white and just ordered and received a 2-tone Shasta decal to put on it. Kinda sucks cause I was hoping it (mine) was gonna be a first...LOL Oh well, in any event, my awning, ropes, and stakes all fit nicely in that box/step without having to dig around under the dinette benches for it all.

I use a train conductors step from the Wabash RR. Dates back to the 40's or 50's.
