For the life of me I can't figure out how the windows are supposed to work, whether they are stuck, or whether I am just doing something wrong. First, only one has an original crank handle, but it just goes round and round. Am I doomed to having to replace them? Also, they were all gunked up with caulk, but that is easy enough to get off. Pictures would be appreciated. Looking forward to getting something accomplished on the interior this weekend. We're hoping for cloud cover so we don't melt into the floorboards.

Hi. While photos of what you are working with would help, I think there were only a couple manufacturers that were building the windows back in that era. My 1970 is loaded up with Hehr awning-style windows. Every one of the windows was stiff and resisted opening. It just plain comes from old age and dirt in the workings. I have had all the windows out of the trailer, taken apart, polished and cleaned, put back together and reinstalled. They all workk like new now, and all I can account for that is the cleaning. The problem you describe with the crank handle going around without doing anything sounds like the gearing is stripped in the unit itself. This will have to be replaced. Also, the missing crank handles are fairly readily available as well. I'll look up some sources for you. If you live anywhere near an area that has a concentration of mobile home parks, you might find these parts available through a local hardware store. There were several makes of campers and mobiles that all used the same types of components for these windows. "Gunked up with caulk" is NEVER good...on any part of the camper, and especially windows. I will try today to get you some close-up photos of what I have been working with, and how they go together, if that will be of any help. I sure wish I had taken more photos when they were all apart, and being re-assembled.

I appreciate the info. Sounds like our best bet might be to remove them to try to clean them, and then if we can't get them working we'll be ready to put new ones in. Look forward to your close ups. I'll try to take some pictures tomorrow to attach.
