We have had our Vintage 1971 Sprite 400 at the shop twice and they cant figure out why the surge brake keeps connecting not allowing us to get out trailer backed up. They are not sure they can figure it out. It is intermittent but most of the time it locks up We cant find out much info about this trailer as it was designed in the UK. We recently purchased it and had it out once could not get it back into our driveway because the brake locks up. Any advice would be worth a million. Thanks in Advance

When you back a trailer with surge brakes if it meets ANY resistance it will set the brakes thinking it is weight transfer when going forward trying to stop. Many surge controllers have a small hole that you insert a small metal pin in to lock out hitch movement while backing. Some early Atwood couplers didn't have any way to lock out the surge so we drilled a hole right behind the linkage to insert a 1/4 inch rod. BE CERTAIN to remove pin before towing or brakes won't work. Let me know if you need more info.

On my boat trailer the surge brake unit on the tongue had a latch you pushed up, which kept the brake plunger from moving. Keep looking you might find an answer. Roger

Surge brakes should be disabled to back up...
