This is one of the more "common" sights on the road around here, when ya spot a cycle with a trailer that is. I am surprised that this hasn't caught on here in the Finger Lakes, though...

I think there is a current Geico television ad with a guy driving a vintage bike, with a side car towing a teardrop. I tell my wife when I see it, that it's every single guy's dream...while hastily adding "with which no happily married guy would ever want to trade places"...

I moved from a tent to a canned ham to get out of the rain. Yet I do love motorcycles. So if I go this route, now I'm rained on while driving but dry at night? Interesting.

They used to call me "side hack mac" My wife, daughter and I traveled many a mile on a vertical 650 twin and seen things you would have missed in a car. Yes we got rained on now and then and even rode some in below zero weather as long as no snow. Wouldn't trade those times for anything. We had a custom built side car that was large enough for our gear, a cooler and my wife. I thought about manufacturing them but never did even though I had a lot of interest. My daughter, who is now 49 years old was just talking about those adventures the other day and how great they were.

Hi Bill,
It's stories like yours that make life special. Adventure and the free spirit that comes with being younger. Just having your daughter remember strengthens the feelings, the smells, and what you saw. Life is rich when we take the opportunity to break out. Your tidbits share a story that would be great to share in detail around a campfire.
I can relate. As a child, I dreamed of having a motorcycle. I went to the library back when kids went to the library to read books when they were bored. I hungered for a motorcycle one day. I remember eating up a book about a guy who drove across the country on his motorcycle and I dreamed of doing that once. This was the 70's. That day came in my early 20's and I bought a used Suzuki GS 450sx. I drove it all over and included a camping trip out to the Grand Canyon on the little twin-cylindered wonder. Speed and curves were King, but then I got older and smarter... and I sold it. It was great stuff.
Cheers,
Rod

Cheers, Rod Rod As I try to tell people, it is important to establish a good home for your family then try to follow both yours and your spouses dreams. One can't always afford to do everything in the style they would prefer but it is better to do it in a style that you can afford than to never do it at all. I was lucky enough to grow up in a time when many things that today would be priced out of a working mans reach were still affordable. I didn't always have the best thing there but at least I was there, and sometimes I won. I have had several friends that spent their entire life saying someday and that day never came. We were very fortunate that most of the things we wanted to do we found the time and money to do it. Even though we are slower than we once was, we still hope to do more and if I live to be two hundred I might get it all done.

I love this thread. Especially what bigbill said "better to do it in a style that you can afford than to never do it at all". Amen. I do wonder though is it really possible to "get it all done". If so, then what? I know...TV, checkers, shuffleboard and fishing, of course.

Once you stop dreaming of thing to do or see, you might as well be dead. The true joys of life is learning. We do this through our experiences. This includes everything from reading a book to raising a family. As we travel through our time here on earth everything we do or see contributes to our learning, this includes things from learning personal care to climbing a mountain. What makes life worth living is the little challenges we face every day as we start new adventures.
