Hi, I know most compacts don't have breaks, but I am wanting to put some on mine because we are most likely going to be towing it with a small car, and just want to be on the safe side. So can I put new breaks on while using the old drums? Or do I have to get new drums too?
Thanks

If you already have brake drums then your trailer has brakes if so you have two options. Disassemble them and buy what ever parts needed to properly repair them or you can sometimes purchase complete new brake assemblies for less than you can repair the old units.

Last fall the breaks were locked up so we took them off, they are long gone.. So I was thinking about buying these breaks www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Brakes/Dexter/23-27.htmlBut I just need to know if I can use my old drums with the new breaks? I really don't want to shell out more money to buy new drums too when mine work just fine, just didnt know if they are compatible?? The website is wanting you to buy these with them www.etrailer.com/p-84546UC3.html but I would prefer not to

The only way to be certain is to either have the exact measurement from your old backing plates including recess area for flange and flange bolt patterns or order them and see if they fit. If they don't work with your drums them you would either send them back or order new drums. Most likely they will work but one never knows on these old trailers what has been modified. Good Luck

What bigbill said is right. I am doing brakes right now. My drums are 10" across and 2" depth. I ordered from E-Trailer, the complete backing plates with self-adjusters, hoping they would work with my Hadco drums. I have one installed, and it's looking good so far. You do need to measure the 4 bolt pattern on your axle to make sure the backing plate will match. Be sure to order the nuts/lock washers for the new plate. You will also need new grease seals. That gets tricky unless you have the old part to get a number from. You should be able to use the existing drums, measure them. Good luck. Roger
