Hi all... Looking for an awesome beach campground 1 day driving distance from ATL... Any recommendations? Rolling with 3 kids in the Nasty Shasty! Prefer recommendations of places that you have experienced and said, "WOW" I want to come back to this place!
Thanks

Our favorite one is Hunting Island State Park in South Carolina! If you are lucky enough to pick up one of the sites right on the ocean....even better!! Another is Anastasia State Park in St. Augustine, Florida. Lots of great campsites, walking distance to the beach and drive into St. Augustine to visit the old towne and the oldest masonry fort in the continental US, Castillo de San Marcos. San Sebastian Winery is a great place to check out. We have reservations here, for November. Just a few more months to go!! We recently discovered our newest favorite and are heading back in February 2016, St. Joseph Peninsula State Park in the crook of the pan handle of Florida.

Have you ever went to Tybee Island's? I haven't myself but I have heard good things from the guys at work.

We were there a few years back and camped at River's End Campground It's a great campground, as well as, the bathhouses. Tybee Island has that small town, low country feel. There was a great restaurant near the lighthouse, just can't remember the name of it, though.

I finally figure out who you are Shasta1400! LoL! It was nice camping beside you guys at the Rally last year. My kids loved having more kids their age around. See you there again in the fall!

Edisto & Hunting Island are both great in SC. If you want to day trip to Charleston (we did for Fort Sumter & Patriots Pointe) then Edisto is a little closer. Edisto also has a protected beach just down the road. It's a hike/easy walk in. Huge fines for taking a single shell. Neat to see a natural beach.
Anastasia is alright but campground is not "on" the water. Nice secluded sites. Some better than others. Beach is a LONG walk from parking lot (and further from campground). Where as Hunting & Edisto the campground is literally behind the dune.
Grayton beach near Destin/PCB is good too. We didn't camp there. We stayed in the cabins that trip.

Also. If you end up at Anasatsia ever. The Racoons are BAD. They are no joke. Stole $20+ of meat & cheese and left our cooler open. Never stayed in a park with Racoons as active as they are.

Yeah, they have no problem at all with opening a cooler. Smart little rascals they are. Had they warned us at check in I would have left the cooler in the truck or camper. Found an obscure sign at the bathhouse on the 3rd day. Guy at the little gift shop wasn't surprised when I mentioned it while buying ice. Took a stroll into the woods behind our site. Bush whacking if you will. Just littered with torn up meat packages, bacon, foil etc etc. We did learn they don't like spicy. We had precooked some ground beef with jalapeños. They tore the 2 bags open and ruined it but didn't take them or eat much. They took off with our grilled steak and onions we had for phillies.
