I have my 62 compact rear window out and want to seal it well before I put it back in.My question is the black glass seal that is between the glass and the frame designed to keep water out or just hold the glass to the frame? Mine is leaking slightly, and I'm not sure if the glazing strip from I'vts will make it water tight. I'm thinking about removing the glass and putting in a new seal but I can"t see how the glass comes out. Is the glass seal the only thing holding the glass in place? Thanks

Hi Pennyg,
There should be clip in strip retainers for the glass.
Take your window to the local glass shop and have them look at it. My gal is really clever at replacing the seal or glass. No leaks in the window when she is done.
Also, check the window frame itself for broken welds and needed sealants.

What do the clip in retainer strips look like? I took off the old rubber glazing strip and now I can see the edges of the glass. It looks like it is just stuck onto the black glass seal with nothing holding it on. Is that possible ? I would think it would fall out

It looks like it is just stuck onto the black glass seal with nothing holding it on. Is that possible ? I would think it would fall out There were no clips holding in the window of our 62 Shasta Compact, (no clips on our friends 63 Compact either) just black glazing tape and the glazing strip. We used new black glazing tape to hold the new glass in and when I put in the new glazing strip, I added TremPro 644 RTV Silicone (aluminum color). On the old forum, Vikx had a write up of how to put the glass onto the new black glazing tape, but I don't have the info any more. She said to spray with Windex to allow more wiggle room because the glass with grip immediately onto the black tape and you can't adjust it after. I didn't use the Windex and luckily got the glass where I wanted it because it really does stick. WARNING: When you try to remove the old glass off of the old black tape, the glass will probably break. That's when mine broke. Maybe there is a solvent to help release the glass from the tape? In hindsight I should have just left the old glass in. Also if you use the RTV silicone, be sure to clean up any reside right away. I thought I did but the next day I could see more. I used the aluminum color which is almost clear so it was hard to see the extra that needed removing. Also, before you can put in new black tape you must make sure the aluminum is clean of any of the old tape residue and dirt. We also wipe it down with rubbing alcohol to give the black tape a clean surface to adhere to. These are the products I bought from VTS and used to install the new glass: TremPro 655 RTV Silicone - I know, it's silicone but it is made for installing new gaskets according to VTS. I got the aluminum color so it wouldn't show. www.vintagetrailersupply.com/TremPro_644_RTV_p/vts-566.htmGlazing Tape: www.vintagetrailersupply.com/Butyl_Glazing_Tape_p/vts-137.htmVikx might still have the discussion thread about the glazing tape, I can't find the copy I saved, think I deleted it after I finished the window.

Yup, I remember when the CRACK happened to me! Yes, I used a small amount of the TremPro 655 RTV Silicone between the gray glazing strip and the glass and added a little in the corners where the glazing strips meet. So far, so good. Be sure to get all the goo-gone off the aluminum or the black glazing tape won't stick.

Hi all, I'm in a similar boat trying to seal the fixed back compact window. Yep, I have already broken the glass. Nope, I didn't have any clippy-retainer thingyies. I tried to seal it with silicone and it failed the water-holding test. So, I ordered the tape and silcone from Vintage Trailer Supply for the recommended repair. Then I saw this on Roothawg's blog (http://theadventuresofavalair.blogspot.com/ -- you'll have to scroll down a bit for the photos and description of what he did. And yes, he said I could mention him here. ) Maybe he'll wade in here, but I understand it, it's what they use to install windshields in cars. Has anyone else tried this kind of solution? Frankly it seems more secure than the tape/caulk option but I defer to the pros on the board. Thanks! paula

I am all in favor of guys that want to restore things to original condition. However, if things can be improved on, I don't see why not. I have a friend that works for a glass company and he turned me on to this stuff. The old cork glass setting tape is ok, but this stuff is far superior. I use it for all of my hot rods. It is messy and permanent. So, be sure your stuff fits before you install.

What happens if the glass breaks?? Seems like the windshield "glue" might make for a difficult repair...

It's the same if you have a windshield replaced. Just cut it out and go from there. It's pretty pliable.
