I have recently bought what I believe is a 1963 Shasta compact. I bought only with a hand written Bill of sale, no title.... I took a wire brush to the tongue and found the vin# which is P1575. How do I register it in N.C? What if it was stolen sometime in the past? I would appreciate any help I get. Thank you all for your time.

What I have been told by my NCDMV, it is illegal to sell a vehicle with out a title, in the State of North Carolina. If you purchased the trailer in North Carolina with ONLY a Bill If Sale, you will have to contact the Theft and Recovery Department of NCDMV and make a request for a Bonded Title. An agent of Theft and Recovery will come out and inspect, take pictures and make sure that there is a VIN# on the trailer. They will go back to their office and research it. If it is not a list of stolen trailers, they will approve the request for a clean title. Not real sure what happens if it shows up as a stolen trailer. Nevre had to deal with that.
However, I have gone through this process, when we lived in Ashe County, for my 1929 Model A Tudor, which I had a clean title, but it had to go through Theft and Recovery anyway ( due to it's age). I also had a 1960 Serro Scotty done this way and I bought in North Carolina with only 2 Bill Of Sales, not knowing the rules!
As for your Shasta's vin#, you do have a 1963 Compact, produced in Leola, Pennsylvania.
Hope this helps.

If it comes up stolen through NCIC they will most likely require you to settle with the original owner or their insurance company at the least, plus they might hold it for evidence if they bring charges against the person you bought it from. This is why you never redo one until you have a clear title in your hands. Even in a state that doesn't require a title I would want one just to protect myself plus when you decide to sell it if someone from another state might wish to buy it and their state might require a title you will need it then. More states are requiring titles every year. A title adds to the value of any trailer.

Thanks for the info. I really don't know what to do at this point. The guy I had bought it from received it from his father who he said was prison. I'm scared to have the trailer looked at because for all I know it was stolen 20 years ago or something crazy like that. Someone I know suggested changing the vin to one that is on a trailer that I have already registered, im sure this is illegal but just to satisfy my curiosity are this campers registered legally as travel trainers when you get the plate or just as plain trailers. I don't won't to do anything illegal, I'm just looking for my best solution.

I had to have someone from the DMV come inspect it to make sure it was road worthy. I also had to get a bond on it and I took all that info to the DMV. When I turned it in it showed that the camper had a title issued to the previous owner which had never been picked up. He was able to release the title to me and all is well. I'm not sure what would have happened if it didn't work out that well. I did spend $100 on a bond that I ended up not needing. Good luck!

Hello Swampdonkey, welcome to the board. I live outside of Brevard, NC. I, too, bought a camper without a title, at an storage facility abandoned property auction. I had to go thru the Licensure and Theft department of my county DMV. Might I suggest calling them, tell them you are looking to buy a camper without a title and see if they will run the vin number for you.
