I will be painting our shasta soon and I've noticed some people paint the hinge, others don't. I think some take the door completely off, some say paint the hinge and aluminum trim around the door, others say tape it off? Thoughts?

hamlet's hinge was painted, and over the past five years, the paint has chipped some. Not bad, but we notice it. The painting was done professionaly, and the rest has held up well.

Eventually, painted hinges will always chip. You have decide if, after all the work you've put into it, that is something you can live with. On my trailer, when the door is closed, only the hinge barrel is visible, not the leafs, looks like yours is the same.
Some paint the drip cap and eyebrows, some polish them. What you plan for them should be considered.
The door of my 65 Aloha is now off. I will pre-fit the door after re-skinning, then remove it again for painting. I will paint the flat metal trim around my door but the hinge will not be painted, the chipping would bother me to no end. But that's me.
YMMV, Looking forward to seeing how your trailer turns out.

I like to polish the hinge. Polish does not chip.

I did not paint mine.. once again, I think it was painted but none remains. My only problem is that the screen door hinges have rusted. I'm trying to figure out how to just clean and paint those sections.

Just the moving part is unpainted not the connected trim? SusieQ, do you have a photo of your door? I'm wondering how much of the trim to paint. Yas painted his and it looks good too.

I only painted the trim on the hinge side of the door because if you paint the trim on the closing side, it too will chip. Didn't paint the bottom or top either for the same reason. Notice also that the hinge on the storage door is not painted.

Well, mine's not quite ready for show and this isn't a really good pic. I didn't paint the trim that goes on the door frame, but now I'm thinking I should. I polished it. I didn't realize the piece on the other side wasn't going to show. I might still paint my hinge because I don't think the rusty screen hinges are going to clean up well.

I had to paint my hinge.. It is steel and polishing it up was not an option. I went with a Rustoleum Almond, the same as my base coat and I have not had a chip or flake in two year. I also had a rusted out foot and screen hinge as well. It was trick but I was able to add a better section of hinge and move on without replacing the whole hinge. It was tricky but do-able..
<a href="http://s866.photobucket.com/user/crossfire3081/media/71%20Shasta%20Loflyte%20Door%20Renovation/CopyofPostpic4.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab227/crossfire3081/71%20Shasta%20Loflyte%20Door%20Renovation/CopyofPostpic4.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo CopyofPostpic4.jpg"/></a>
Don’t' forget.. when you remove the hinge for painting and repair be sure and separate and isolate a steel hinge from the aluminum frame with some webbing or stripping..

Thanks Gang, Great photos.
A lot to consider for a simple hinge(s) but better to do it now.

I put my baggage door back on like it was originally and realized when I was reaching in and getting my tools I had laid down inside that upside down would have probably been more convenient. However, my hinge is a little on the fragile side where it riveted to the door, so maybe it's best I leave it as is? Or add a chain so wont fall down too far? I propped it up with stick of wood and I also thought maybe I could find a creative way to just add a prop to the door. Sorry, NC. didn't mean to hijack your hinge thread.

And I did paint the hinge on my baggage door because it was obviously painted before and it looked odd not painted. The eyebrow really makes it less noticeable when the door hinge is on the top.
