So, I am picking up my Shasta on Thursday... The current owner wants to take the gas lamp that is hanging above the kitchen. I am not a big fan of using LP unless I absolutely have to... I typically cook and then turn it off. So, I would never use it anyway.
Is there anything people use in lieu of this light? A battery operated something?
And then the question comes up, do I let them remove it, or ask them to wait and let me do it? I want to make sure if it is removed it is caped off properly so my kid and puppies don't get seriously hurt from a gas leak...

Most of us keep the gas lamp because it looks good/vintage. Some use it in an emergency. You can easily convert it to a small LCD bulb to retain the vintage look, but have a working light. I went out of my way to buy a replacement light for my trailer as it was missing. I would encourage you to keep it in case you change your mind as you get into your restoration.

If you said he could have it then i would honor my word but I would remove it and take it back to him so that I would know that the line was properly capped and not damaged. Then you will have a hole to repair or cover with something else.

Not sure what model you have, but we use the gas lamp in our Compact for a couple things. First, for the obvious, we use it for light. We enjoy the warm glow and the ambiance it provides. We also use it to warm the trailer up a bit on a cool evening. The Compact is so small, it wprks pretty well. And if we're boondocking, we don't have 110 to plug the space heater into.

Big Bill, I told them if I decided to remove it. I haven't decided. He asked if I had... I basically told him I hadn't but that if I remove it, I would like to do so myself.
Hamlet, gas anything for longer periods of time scares me. I have a solar lamp and some rechargeable battery lights in my current trailer that I am going to transfer over to the Shasta. I have also been researching adding some 12V power. They make these roll and stick solar panels that alot of T@B owners use (I have a T@B currently). If having 12V IS an option, I would use solar panels to trickle charge and run lights... I also have a Honda generator....

I am using AA battery powered LED lights for my off grid use, which will be minor usage. Just if we lay over in a Walmart parking lot to grab a few hours rest. Even then I hope to use gas generator most of the time when shore power is not availeable.

Have not made that decision yet but have been noticing the prices seem to be dropping on the LED bulbs, if that continues I will even be replacing the florescent bulbs in my house with LEDs.
