So yesterday I was at Home Depot and walked by the AC units on display. This one was on the floor (the box half missing) but still brand new. Got it on sale for $79! So I got it anyways, and have 90 days to return it if we don't want to use it. I couldn't pass up that price. It's a GE 5,000 BTU 115-Volt Window Air Conditioner. It's 15.3"d x 17.8"w x12"h So now I gotta figure out where to install the darn thing....What would you do?

The watts or amps are what tells how much power it will use. The common comparison is the SEER rating the higher the number the more efficient they are. Standard circuits that we call 110 will range from 104 to a 140 volts but usually is between 110 and 120 volts.

it's not the voltage that matters, amps are whats important. I done some searching, and home depot online doesnt carry it any more, I found it on wal-mart.com, then had to search some more to find the info I needed
5,050 BTU, 9.7 EER, 4.9 amps EZ mount window kit Adjustable thermostat 2 cooling / 2 fan only speeds Power interruption restart Non-ozone-depleting refrigerant (R-410A) Fits windows 23 in. - 38 in. wide, minimum height 12-1/2 in. Rigid slide-out filter Unit Type - Cool Only Color Appearance Cool White MFG Model #: AEL05LQ MFG Part #: AEL05LQ
Bottom line is it pulls 4.9 amps, not bad at all for an AC unit, most older campers have a 15 amp breaker, and most camp sites have 30 amp breakers,
to put it into perspective a fantastic fan uses 2 amps, a small TV uses 1.5 amps, a pair of lights 1 amp, a 700 watt microwave uses 5.8 amps. a stovetop burner uses 15 amps etc.
bottom line if you have a 15 amp setup, 1/3 of your power will be used for AC.

This warm spell won't hurt sales either.

A good way to power the A/C is a separate heavy duty cord. You can go thru the floor or a hatch and bypass the trailer electrical. Most 58 Shastas do not have a heavy duty inlet (my 57s had a non-grounded dangling plug). The skinny cord won't support most air conditioners along with 110 lights and extras.

OR maybe it is time for a new breaker box and a circuit for the A/C only and new heavier duty power cord with proper connections. Have you ever seen how fast a trailer can burn to the ground? Not trying to scare anyone just something to think about, it is a small investment compared to what you have in your trailer.

The first thing done on Tallulah Belle's renovation was to perform an energy audit and design an new electrical system. We are going with a Marinco 30 amp twist lock shore plug (the PO had included a new one in a box of parts) and the breaker box has 30 amp main breaker and five 20 amp circuits for lights, tv, fridge, A/C znd receptacles. The original wiring was circa 1960 cloth wrapped two wire stuff that was barely adequate tyo illuminate a 40 watt bulb.

Here is Sundance's (57 Shasta 1500) new box in the street side dinette: We used a VTS 15 amp inlet but this trailer can be easily upgrade to 30 amps. All of my trailers are wired to the box for 30 amps. (10 ga wire) It is the owner's choice whether to upgrade now or later.

When planning to install/purchase an ac, keep in mind if the filter is front or side access. Front access is usually easier as there is no need to remove the ac to clean the filter.
