Here is the gap. Strange thing is if cushions were wide enough to close the gap, they would either be too tall for windows when seating . . . Or is bottom cushion supposed to extend further?

Sprung seats used slats to support them across the gap. I would let them meet in the middle and place foam bolsters at each wall. They'd be 4", an easy size to find...

Sorry about the brief thread jack, but I had a related question. I thought the table was to be used to cover the gap. On my Westerner, The table is too narrow and will not reach the dinettes on each side of the gap. As far as i can tell, the table is original. thanks Rod

1964 Airflyte, front dinette. The table is not wide enough to span the gap between the bench bases. I found the slats underneath one of the seats when I brought it home. They are here on the table. The framework and hiniges are familiar on the seats, but I don't have measurements handy for mine. This is the underneath side. The "catch" was designed to hook onto the inner edge of the base frame. There is a little overhang of the base, but not lots. This is with the one side down. The slat is visible here, and the cushion appears to cover all of halfway across. I was not clever enough to save a photo of the bed made all the way down...perhaps it was because the supervisor had to be directly in the way of any progress...much like any other job. She did find it to be comfortable...for her.

Ten,
Thanks for the visual on the slats. Now I get it. I will see how I can doctor my dinettes to accommodate some slates into its current design.
Cheers

Chiming in on this shasta quirk. Confirming the table is not wide enough to span the seats otherwise you couldn't get in behind it. I have a 56 1500 with reupholstered seats, and the gap is nowhere near 9" in fact I don't even bother with a bolster-- so not sure what to tell you there--something seems not quite right. There's a ledge 3/4 inch down all the way across the face of the sliding seat cabinet that you put the spacers on. The rest is held up by the dinette cabinet framing. You might find my post on doing the upholstery helpful. aguadream.blogspot.com/2012/09/reupholstering-dinette-seats.html
