We are looking at MAYBE buying a 3-way refrigerator for our Compact. I have never been around any of these appliances before. Do they need vented like a furnace does and are they more trouble than they are worth??

They usually need a bottom side skin vent and either another higher side vent or roof vent also. We have always liked the 3 way fridges. Cold stuff no matter what happens to ya! Good Luck. Soup

It's cheaper to buy a parts camper with a working one in it to swap out. Part the rest and sell the chasis as a utility or Quad trailer to pay for the trailer and fridge! Just sayin

Used fridges are not good deals. They often fail quite quickly and can't be repaired. The cooling unit on the back must be rebuilt and there aren't any companies rebuilding the small ones that fit most of our trailers.
If you do decide to go with a used fridge, be sure it gets cold top and bottom. Yellow powder on the coils/cooling unit means it has already failed. A lot of rust is another sign that it is not a good fridge. You might get 10 hours or 10 years, no way to tell.

Good points Vikx. Also if you smell amonia when opening the door of the fridge it's toast. IMHO Old ones are worth a shot (sense new is $800+ and you can get a whole camper with a working fridge for the cost of a new fridge) as long as it freezes water and stays that way over 24 hours. Besides you can't tell if one of the modern new ones will last ten hours or ten years either LOL. You wouldn't believe how many times the wife and I buy something brand new that comes out of the box not working! It's so bad with me, I won't even pick out the box from the shelf. I make her choose or even a store employee has better luck choosing the box that works LOL Sorry, I just hate newly made products from china. We even drive 60's and 70's cars as our daily drivers... I would NEVER drop $1K large or more on just a fridge, but I'm not rich either. If I was making $60,000 a year I would buy new. If one of us could figure out how to repair these old ones they could make bank for sure.

I dunno how small a fridge Vikx is talking about that you can't find replacement cooling units for (I have a 22.5-foot camper, so I dunno what the compacts have for fridges), but this place (http://www.rvcool.com/CUPricing.htm, I have no affiliation with them, I just googled it) carries rebuilt units for some pretty small fridges, for about half the price of a new fridge. For example, for $395 you can get a unit for the following Dometic models: RM360, RM460, RM660, RM2300, RM2400, and RM2500. All of these have the same dimensions: 29 3/4"H x 20 1/2"W x 21 3/8"D. That's pretty tiny...

Great dimensions, just not the correct cooling unit. I think ours was an RM 36 or something like that...
