I'm pretty convinced now that this trailer interior is ash. Around here, I can get 4x8 panels of birch or oak at several local lumberyards for about $30 a 4x8 sheet, but ash is a special order and is $69. I only have 1, maybe 2 panels that are terribly water damaged, but I'm a bit worried about what the grain of the ash might look like when ordered sight unseen. If it was the walls, I'd lean towards painting and get away cheap, but even if I finally decide to paint the walls, I want to keep the roof clear wood...Anyone have experience matching ash interiors?

I have ash and added birch to my ceiling and back panel. It's an obvious difference but not a bad one. I haven't finished the new shellac yet but I think you can find some pics of Nccamper's in his threads.

I used birch for my 57 Deluxe walls. It was "busy" for birch, and looked pretty good. The PO had bought some nice Canadian ply for the ceiling (birch) used that as well.

Dan, I'm in the same boat as you. My Shasta has ash interior and I need to replace One ceiling panel and possibly the front and rear bottom panels. Did you come up with a good subsitute that matches the ash well when shellac'd?

You could try calling "Channel City Lumber" in Santa Barbara, CA and ask what their source for Ash ply is...maybe they will drop ship to you. Both of the independent lumberyards in my city seem to be able to order it, I'm just not sure I want to pay for it. |

OK I called Channel City Lumber and they can't seem to get 1/8 inch Ash because of what they think is lack of demand. You see things like 1/8 inch paneling in birch or ash or oak is bought in either 100 sheet lots or 200 sheet lots. I talked a while with Fred there and explained how California, especially his area because of Pismo and Buellton is a hot spot for this product and he may actually go ahead and order a lot if he feels he can sell it. You know, our trailers take an average of 14 or more sheets for a total rebuild. Most people don't do that though. Most would be ordering 6 to 8 sheets to redo the entire roof, front and rear and the door. Then some of the scrap could be used on places like drawer faces and door faces. So it wouldn't take that many customers interested in the stuff to get rid of an order of ash... I even told Fred that even though I only need 4 sheets at the moment that I would purchase 10 and drive that far to get it. He is in Goleta, CA. near Santa Barbara. It's a beautiful drive anyhow.
So how about everyone in CA who needs this stuff call Fred up at Channel City Lumber and ask for 1/8 inch ash. If he orders it I will take it upon myself to pick up enough for anyone else down in my area who needs it. Just help me out with the gas a little bit. Others from north of there could do the same. I could stop by and deliver to anyone south of there on my trip. Anyone south of me can easily come up and pick it up from my location which is 90 minutes north of San Diego...
What say you?

It sounds like folks out west are starting to feel the same supply problem we live with on the east coast. Nobody wants to stock 1/8 inch birch anymore. Not even speciality plywood businesses. Kind of depressing. I like your plan to concentrate demand on one source. Smart. |

Perhaps just a few months makes a difference, though when I go in there, the level of knowledge varies greatly from employee to employee, so maybe you got the right guy and I got the "yes" man. Did you happen to ask who his supplier was? Perhaps someone more local to you guys down there can order it. If you do get the crazy idea to drive up the coast, I'll buy you a beer for some eyeballs on my sad little trailer ;-) |

I have to come up that way to Atascadero to deliver the Aljoa when I am finished with it. So I may bring a load with me if the demand is there. I have no problem getting 1/8 inch birch. It's the Ash that has been a problem due to some kind of wood beatle that was traveling with the ash. They oulawed the transport of it for a few years. That is now gone. But we need a demand for someone to invest in a large order like 100 or 200 sheets. I have my local supplier working on it now and will get back to you all as soon as I hear from them.

Bad link... But Iknow where it's going. This is the whole reason Ash has been so hard to find in the last 5 years. That insect travels with the ash so it's been illegal to transport it. I had heard that the problem had been eradicated. |

Not necessarily true, the Emerald Ash Bore is transported via firewood not finished products, like furniture, plywood or baseball bats. There have been cases of the beetle being transported under RV's and cars, bit those are rare, although that's how they believe it came to Colorado.

They did not bother to discriminate. That would take way too much time off the golf course. |
