I have an update to my original post. You can find 1/8 birch for $18.95 a 4 x 8 sheet at Far West Plywood in Northridge, Ca at 18450 Parthinia Place. www.farwestplywood.com/. I asked for door skins, and all they only carry the 1/8 and veneer. The number was referred by Northridge Lumber which I mentioned in my original post. Far West Plywood is open limited hours on Saturdays. Call first. Just an aside, during the conversation, I asked about pricing and employee then asked me for my company name and I just said I was restoring a 57 trailer and he just said, "Sure, no prob." Cheers Rod

I recently purchased ten sheets of Maple paneling for a Silver Streak rebuild. Maple has a very fine grain and I will be staining it dark Mahogany.
1/8" was $23.31 a sheet, and 1/4" thickness was $31.23 a sheet.
The source was Reel Lumber, with stores in both Anaheim, and Riverside, CA.
They also stocked Birch, and Oak in both 1/8" and 1/4" thickness.
They had a good inventory of specialty wood trims.

Anybody find a source in NC?
I even tried a large cabinet maker but came up with nothing 1/8.
Even Hood distributers which carries "everything ply" has nothing. Capital lumber which has been in the same spot for 70 years hasn't had it in "longer than we can remember".
Yet it seems like they sell it everywhere in CA!

I stopped by the Home Depot in Canoga Park on Roscoe Boulevard to get a blade for my multi tool. On a whim, I asked about 1/ 8" birch. The employee shows me a 1 foot stack of 1/8" birch. The price was the same as the Luan at $10. I think I will cover my storage compartment with the birch.
Cheers,

At least take the time to finish a piece, "before you install it". I just passed up some 5/8" plywood at Home Depot because the quality was so poor.
The cheap paneling looks fine when laying flat, but when you bend it, all of the voids inside the plies show up, and usually crack.
Because of the large amount of time spent in installing, sanding, finishing, cost of materials to finish, I find it "most cost effective" to buy the best quality paneling (domestic made) that I can find at the time I need it. The difference of only $10/sheet more for the better quality is well worth the cost, just my opinion. Your looking at about a $100 total difference to do a whole trailer with the best quality paneling.

John, You make some good points. $20 per sheet is a bargain when compared to the ash paneling in my Westerner. It is is very hard to find and when you do, it's $64.95 a sheet. It's sometimes available at FarWestPlywood.comCheers Rod

They have 1/4" "Birch" at my home depot, but is sure seems more like white wood or some other type material. I have used it for backing furniture I have made, but the surface is very soft and sucks finish like a sponge. It does not seem like it would be a good match to what is in a vintage trailer.

We could all just start calling them up and asking for ash. Let's instigate a local call in campaign. I would love some ash, but I am not even close to doing the interior paneling. www.ganahllumber.com/index.php/store-locations/Cheers Rod
