OMG! Stop that! I already have an innate fear of circular saws and I have to use it at least one more time. Ad: Skilsaw Wife says its gotta go. 7 1/4 blade. Runs great. The good: Pretty much stops at nothing when cutting. The bad: safety guard malfunctions randomly. Probably easy repair.

A reasonable amount of fear is a good thing when using any tool. It is easier to cut your self with a power saw but people have cut off fingers with a hand saw, the thing to keep in mind is no matter what you are doing you can get injured if you fail to stay alert to the dangers involved. I watched a guy cut off his finger while cleaning fish several years ago. A gentleman lost his hand while using a hammer to pound in stakes for a large tent, the hammer missed the stake and crushed his wrist beyond repair at that time (in todays world they might have saved it). If we stop to think about it how many accidents could have been avoided if we had been paying closer attention. The person most likely to get hurt is one that has been doing something for years and they let their guard down. To quote an old TV show "BE CAREFUL OUT THERE".

Bill, we don't think about hammers as being dangerous but you just reminded me of an accident I had when I was teen. We were in the woods building a fort (just us girls) and I was hammering a large spike. I missed and hit my knuckle on the head of the spike and cut it open. My mom was an RN. When I showed it to her said, "I see the tendon." Ouch. I still have that scar. Had forgotten about it until now.

That is what I was talking about it isn't just saws we have to watch. When I was an early teen my mother sent me to the store one bright winter day to get a jug of milk, back when milk came in glass jugs, I slipped on some ice and almost lost the thumb and index finger on my left hand. all it takes is a split second to let your guard down and things happen.

Agreed bigbill... tools need to be respected, and safety not taken for granted.

Yessir, back in June I almost cut off my left thumb on my tablesaw.(Of course while working on my trailer). The surgeon in the ER said it is rare that a neophite craftsman comes in with that kind of injury...it is usually someone who's been using power tools for 30 or40 years. That would be me....never had a single accident before. Incidentally, it was AMAZING how well it healed, regained full use in about 6 weeks, although there is some nerve damage. My wife & I own an art gallery / framing business ( just the two of us) about 10 days after I wrecked my thumb she cut the tips of two fingers real bad with a utility knife. Had stitches in both fingers. Again, this happened doing something she's done without a mishap for almost 20 years. Sometimes it is just that your number is up. Ever tried picture framing with only one hand? Its tricky.
