I'm near Dallas but in same boat as you (know sewing, don't know electrical) I don't know who else is in this area - I'm pretty close to the big airport.

Our 1974 Shasta was totally infested with mice. Every single surface. It was really gross. I wore a painters suit, shoe covers, mask, hair cover and gloves and made sure the trailer was ventilated when working on it. I removed everything out of the drawers. Ours had been sitting since 1977. There were mouse nests all over the place, including over the wheel wells. I put bleach water in my shark steamer and steamed the floors and the inside of every drawer and cabinet. After wiping all the yuck out, I steamed it again and let it air dry. My husband painted the inside of all the drawers with enamel paint. So now everything is better than new. My floor looks brand new. We also had snake skins hanging in ours but saw no active signs of either mice or snakes, but did find a few mouse carcasses. I soaked all the drawer pulls and handles in simple green too. I used Murphy's Oil Soap on other services we could not use bleach on or paint. It has been a job! I saved al the nasty covered cushions and had new ones made at a local auto upholstery shop. They are amazing. Our AC has not been run since 1977 but cools like new!! All electrical works too. My husband has replaced the plumbing with CPVC. We are moving along on this project. We were gifted this trailer by my brother in law, after his parents died. We have kept pictures of before and during and hopefully after before too long. The finished product will be revealed when we have an "Open Trailer" at a nearby state park this fall. Good luck on the cleanup.

Surprisingly, all the lights, the refrigerator and stove work in mind too. I figured everything would need to be rewired so that was a bonus. Guess there was too much other fun stuff to chew than wiring.
As for the cleanup--you're right that it's nasty. I'm about 2/3rds done at this point and I clean everything with pinesol (I had lots of dirt dobber nests too) then spray it with bleach and let it dry. I have taken the dinette bases out and scrubbed them down--probably got them much wetter than wood should really be but mine have curved edges that I can't replicate. They came through just fine though. A layer of Kilz over everything will be my last layer of attack. Good thing I was planning on painting it all anyway!

Keri, we had mice everywhere. Droppings, urine, you name it. Granted, we tore everything down to the ground, but before I knew I was going to do that, I did a bleach mixture and beached the heck out of everything. I was worried about the Hanta virus, which is (kinda) common here in California. Just make sure you are in a ventilated area, I kept the widows open and used a mask, gloves, etc. Hope you are having good luck! There is Shasta life after rats (mice)...critters..lol

I meant to say that my husband used Kilz before painting all those surfaces.

Yeah, I'm glad I didn't find any snakes or their skins although we DID find a long-dead scorpion (my dad calls them stinging lizards). It all seems to clean up pretty good--I just want to get finished and feel like it's clean, you know?

Reuse your original frames and springs. The springs can be cleaned and repainted and the frames, if not rotted, will be good for another 50 years...nothing like originals. Car seats were done like this not so long ago and upholsters would reuse the frames and metal parts unless they were just too far gone.

I've definitely decided to reuse the frames and springs. They're in pretty decent shape other than just needing to be cleaned really well. And there is just enough fabric left on them to take measurements for new covers, which is nice. One less thing I have to wing.

The subfloor under my kitchen counter was full of old moldy acorns, and I had a mouse nest in the fan of my furnace. The only dead critter was one mouse that took me two days to find by the smell. He was in the oven.

It seems like it's not truly a vintage trailer unless you find something dead inside.
