or is it just the same amount of poor construction as the smaller trailers, only more of it? There's one for sale in my area and I'm wondering if it's wise to even pursue it. It's a '61 with title.

Update - I'm going to look at it tomorrow. $600 with the title. missing the wings, fridge/icebox, and front window has been changed into something more modern. But it does have practically everything else it appears. I'll risk posting the ad since the owner promised to let me have first look. I guess my main concern is regarding that front window - because I don't like the way the current one looks. dallas.craigslist.org/sdf/rvs/4518692012.html

It needs lots and lots of love. For one in that condition that's as big as a Deluxe is, even $600 seems like a lot of money. It'd probably set you back nearly 10 grand to restore. It might be hard to get that much for selling it. If, however, you like separate eating and sleeping areas, plenty of closet space, a bathroom, and like to take road trips in style and comfort, this could be a great trailer for a family of four or five... or two. It sure would look a lot better at a campsite than one of those behemoth boxes. Yeah, I'd do this one over one of those any day.

I agree it needs a lot of love, but can be done. The price isn't bad. It appears to be missing the water heater access door. It's the same as mine so if you get it I can take pictures and measurements for you. A metal shop could make one pretty easy I would think.
We had an Astrodome and moved up to the Deluxe and love it. It's great for us and our two kids. It's a little tight when we add our two 80 lb labs.
Deluxes are just long enough that sway seems less than a shorter trailer and backing it up is much easier. Empty it should weigh about 2,600 lbs and fully loaded to the max is 4,000 lbs so weight is a consideration, but the tongue weight is not real heavy, I would guess about 350 lbs but I could be wrong.

I like it! Appears to be a frame up, but lots of original parts and pieces left. For 600 bucks, you could part it out and make money...

Have to weigh in on the "Get It' side of the argument. We LOVE our Deluxe, and the extra space pays off when you are camping in it. You will have a few more panels of birch to replace than on a Compact, but so what, right?

Ok, I did it. I feel like somebody who slipped up in rehab (returned to my addiction when nobody was looking). Picking up this trailer on Saturday. I do need to eventually find an original front window and either find or get fabricated the water heater access door. kto17, I will take you up on the offer of picture and dimensions of that door. It will help greatly if I am looking nationwide, might be able to find one somewhere. Also if you could measure/approximate the rough opening of your front window. I think the more modern one on my Deluxe is possibly larger that the original jalousie style, which means they probably enlarged the original opening. Sigh. What have I gotten myself into???

Can you post a picture of the modern window installed?
I'll try to get you some pictures and a sketch soon! I'm excited for you!

You'll have to wait until Saturday then because they've already taken down the CL pictures and I didn't save them first! Believe me, it's nothing nice to look at - it looks totally wrong on the trailer. makes you want to fix it FIRST THING even before redoing all the framing and wall panels.

Ok, took pictures when I picked it up. Trash everywhere but I hope some of the original birch can be salvaged. You can see why I am looking for a front window.

Kathleenc, fret not! If the window opening was enlarged and is now too big, so what?? When you pull the skins, simple reframe the opening with new lumber in the correct dimensions, which I or other Deluxe owners can supply, and install the correct style Hehr jalousie/fixed glass window unit. I promise that the birch under the window area WILL need to be replaced, and you will be pulling skins to replace rot anyway, yes? Congrats on your new Deluxe!!
