Hey all, Decided to take out the original icebox and now having a problem finding a small fridge that will fit in the available space. Have 25 high x 16.5 to 17.25 wide ( if I cut into a vertical piece of original cabinet) and 16 deep to clear the original gas line to stove/oven. Anyone know of a brand that they have used or know of that will work ? Biggest problem is the width. Thanks, Mike

As you are shopping, remember it still has to fit through the door opening.

I searched and came up with nothing. All of the restores that I have seen that replaced the icebox with a fridge ended up cutting the cabinet. I decided to keep my icebox. I do have a small dorm fridge that will fit in the closet.

Yep, think I will have to cut the casework some on both sides to get about anything in place. And,John is right, have to make insure it fits through the small door opening !

Venting is the other issue. It's a shame to cut any vent grate in the skin. With the ice box on the front wall it is even more of a potential water leak issue. With that said, a month out west in the desert heat restocking ice got old fast. Dry ice gets expensive.
The best way to get the frig in (if the door is too narrow) might be to take off the front skin, reframe a little, then seal it back up after you're in. Just a thought.

Sometimes a window is big enough for appliances... You never know 'til you measure.

Absolutely correct. I would also add that you need to "actually measure" the item you want to put through the door opening, DO NOT use their "advertised measurements". In some cases they state the "cabinet size" and not the full size including all of the cooling fins, vents, and tubes on the back.
We found this out the "hard way" when a friend ordered a new "large" propane/electric refrigerator for his 1953 Aljoa. We had to rip out the "newly installed" twin side windows to gain access. Yuck!

I found one small enough for my "compact-style" trailer. Got it from a marine supply. It was horribly expensive - if you want more details, I will try to find them.

I believe it's a Norcold, self-venting and works on electric or 12v. (the way it's built creates a space in the back area, and there is a fan back there) Pretty sure they would have upgraded their offerings by now, but I can look at it this weekend and get the model number if you need it. Note that it cost about $900. It was about $100 more for the stainless front, but it was built with a panel, unlike the black and white versions which have a solid door, so I though it would be easier to customize the front of it. Also,it is possible we might have someone camping with us that needs to keep meds cold, so I thought it was worth it at the time. And I only paid $200 for the camper so it seemed like it "evened out" ok. However, I do not plan on putting a fridge in the other 3 campers I am working on unless I win the lottery.

good news - it was only $800. haha! Norcold NC-DE0740SS and I bought it from Yacht Products Intl. www.yachtproductsintl.com/category_v3.aspx?categoryid=229looks like it only went up about $25 in price since I got mine, and the shipping was free (at that time). You should be able to get the measurements for rough opening required from the link or the Thetford site. Also I think maybe they make the black one with a panel now.

Yes! Things can get small when you start talking about "Marine Boat Gear". They can get expensive too. When you start talking Cold plates and Holding plate technology.. ca ching, ca ching You can drop 2 grand pretty quick... I have yet to see them in the RV industry as of yet, but I am sure they would work. here is quick link to understand what I am talking about.. www.sailmagazine.com/boatworks/choosing-perfect-refrigeration-your-boat

Hey all, Found one that will not require too much in the way of modifications ! Amazon and Walmart sell a 2.5 cu foot from SPT - made in China of course - for $148.00. It's small enough to fit through the door - thanks John - and will only require a bit of trimming of the vertical wood casework on either side of where the old icebox fit. Could actually have used a 3.2 cu ft one from Igloo that would also fit but would require losing the one drawer over the existing icebox location and we did not want to lose it. When installed I'll try to post a picture ! Regards, Mike
PS - now back to removing the old tile, yuck !
