Working on exterior. For paint eventually but will be bare aluminum for awhile..removed most via stripper but would like to sand/polish until I get around to painting. Recommend particular brand? Or just harbor freight? Any advice on best grit to begin with and steps to get best results?

You will need "lots of CFM volume" to run a DA.
The cheaper DA's work OK, if you have enough air volume.
You want enough CFM volume so the compressor is able to keep up, and not over heat by running constantly. IMO, a 220V compressor is about minimum to do any body work, or spray painting.

Depends on the skin condition. It you won't be repairing dents, a Scotch scruff pad might even the surface. We do that or sand with 220, then 320, then prime. Sand again with 400/600 and paint...
Since you won't be painting right away, I would use aluminum wheel cleaner and a scruff pad to get a mill finish. You can always keep going if you're not happy with the result.
Polishing is another world away. Lots of elbow grease, black debris that sticks to you, spendy rouge and fancy machines...

HF sell an electric DA that is great for polishing and buffing, I don't know why it wouldn't work for sanding it is around $50.00 depending on coupons and sales.

You might look at Porter Cable. I have an elec random orbital of theirs that works very well, and I've used it a TON. It's over 10 years old and has been flawless. The issue with it and especially the new version of it is weight. Mine weighs double what an air version does, and the new one is awfully heavy. If you have even a hint of tendinitis issues, I'd stay away from them. But, they do make a small compact version that more closely resembles a DA. That might be the ticket.
