Hello, I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on replacing the jalousie window glass for my Shasta Compact? Should I use tempered glass or would 5 mm regular glass suffice?

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the glass in the jalousie windows are tempered. The rear window, however, originally is NOT.

I'm not positive but I've bought replacement panes that weren't tempered. The glass shop knew they were for jalousies and they polish the edges. I bought 4" x 3/16" panes. They are held in place by little silicone disks. You can see the old ones (dried rubber). VTS sells the disks; very easy repair.

I'm not sure. I have to replace one piece so I think I will eventually just take mine to a glass shop ask them. It may be the thickness and polished edges that give the illusion of tempered glass. I have knocked mine over a couple of times since I've had them out and was totally amazed that they didn't break.

If you do want to go with tempered, I would highly recommend www.peninsulaglass.com. I ordered a 3/8 tempered for my rear window wand save 30$ over a local glass shop that I would have had to driven to 30 miles each way twice.

I assume you used the "one-day glass" area and not the RV (looks like that's for complete windows with frames). Looks like a good one for the Links section.

Hi, Are there pros and cons to tempered glass as replacement glass for vintage trailers? thanks. Rod

I like to use regular glass. It's cheaper and doesn't break in a million pieces if cracked. Also be sure to get the correct thickness when you order it. Most jalousies are 3/16 but other panes can be 1/8, 3/32 or 1/16...

Not sure what length you need, but I have about 12-15 panes from different windows, all excellent condition. Drop me a note and I can check for your sizes. They are all tempered.

Mel, if it's a curbside or streetside window, I have two extra panes. I bought an entire window out of a 61 and I only needed two panes.
I broke one of mine and it broke in a straight line in two pieces. So I guess that means that they are not tempered glass. Guess I jinxed myself with my previous comment.

Thanks, it is the front window, so yours will be too small. The camper came with a stack of glass the same thickness but they seem to be a few mm too short, But I am going to recheck because that was just me holding it up from the interior with the screen in the way

When I bought a couple of jalousie panes for my '61 Compact front window I just took one good piece to my trusted local auto glass company and told them what it was for. They suggested tempered and cut me three pieces to match. They did mention I could "get by" with regular glass if I needed to replace my side panes. I think they charged me about $2.75 each...same day service...dropped the sample off in the morning and they said come back "any time after lunch".

Thanks so much Bruce, there is a small glass shop right by my house, so ill try their first, if they are too much I will try the auto store next. I'm a little bummed that the camper came with all these pieces of glass and they are all too small for the front window. I don't even know what to do with them.
