A description of our 1955 Shasta 1500 renovation is on my website at www.currin.us. It took us some four years and was finished winter 2013. We've been on several trips since completion including two months in Arizona. So far she's performing wonderfully. I hope the document will be of some use to others. The renovation saga was documented on "the site which shall not be mentioned". I'm glad I kept the document on my webpage rather than on the forum, it's made it much easier to move and maintain. I'll keep it up but may condense it into a *.pdf or similar. Glad to be here!

Fantastic web page it does a great job of describing a true rebuild and the effort it takes to make it right. You did well on the Shasta also. Looks like years of enjoyment ahead.

So glad you joined us here, Hugh!... I was going to link your web page if we didn't hear from you soon. You have a great guideline for restoration, and moving forward, making as much available as possible for resources will be important...[not to mention fun!]

Hugh are you still riding recumbents? We ride recumbent trikes or at least did until my wife suffered a leg suck accident. She will have surgery this month and we hope to be riding again late fall or early next spring. I agree it is a fantastic way to enjoy the great outdoors. We don't use power assist but may need to go that direction in the near future.

Thanks all for the kind words.
We haven't ridden bikes/recumbents for several years. We have two puppies (1.5 and 2 years old) so hiking makes more sense that biking. One of my major summer goals though is to get out for a 1-2 week tour on the recumbent. Spending 4 summers renovating Shasta took a bite out of bike riding and touring.
I have a trike half built in the shop. I keep trying to figure how to put a power assist on it, and finish it up. I'll probably put an electric assist on it and use it for local rides. If I works as well as I hope, build another for touring with gas assist.
Way too many projects and far too little time.
Happy camping.

Hugh to build with a gasoline assist you would need to stretch the frame and put engine low behind seat if not it would be in the way of bags. Might look a little strange but would ride smoother with the longer wheel base. I have been looking at one of the electric trailer power units for the wife if she needs it. I took a demo ride with one hooked to a Terra Trike Rover and couldn't believe how great it worked. It had a variable speed control mounted on the handle bar and would actually take off from a stand still on level ground with no pedaling and had top end near twenty mph. Yet when off it had no noticeable drag.
