We are going to close off an old vent where the furnace use to be. Is it okay to use galvanized steel instead of aluminum?

Does it have a steel, or a aluminum roof skin? What's wrong with using the same kind of material as the roof? In the big picture it likely does not matter as long as it's water tight.

Skin is aluminum, we were going to go with the galvanized steel because it costs less. The trailer is going to be painted so didn't think it really mattered.

You guys need to find a metal supply in your area. They have a remnant section that you can buy scraps for something like a dollar a pound. Do not buy pre cut metal at a hardware store because it's "marked way up". You could buy a piece of .040" aluminum to cover your vent for a two bucks.

Go to your local Ace hardware store or lumber yard and buy a small roll of aluminum roof valley material less than ten dollars. Cut out a patch, seal it same as you would a roof vent then screw or rivet it down.

Good on you bigbill, we always want to make things more difficult than they are. However, the remnant discussion merits consideration. Thats what I do.

Steel and aluminum don't "marry" very well. I would definitely go with aluminum. I like a stiffer (heavier gauge) for the roof, for what it's worth...

A roll of aluminum is quite a bit more than $10 (at least in the dimensions I'm looking at), but they will cut and sell by the foot. You need to purchase ALL your metal materials from your local metal supply. Most metal stores also have a "cut off" section and sell the scraps by the pound.
I purchased 2 (Two) 4' by 4' by .040" thick sheets of aluminum this week to rebuild some fenders. That's 32 square feet for $28.00, including tax! At only .88 cents per square foot, the metal needed to cover your 14" by 14" vent should cost no more than a couple of bucks.

Ace sells small rolls of roof valley alum that works great for that. I buy all my large sheets of aluminum from Alro Steel usually in 4"x8' Sheets and several at a time to get a price break. If I need a larger section like a roof panel I buy from the local Semi trailer repair shop by the foot. |

In Ohio Ace sells it in different widths and lengths starting a $6.00 something and goes up from there it probably is just what the store mgr. wishes to stock. To my knowledge the most expensive roll they have here is twenty something. But they don't sell it by the foot here to my knowledge.
