I tend to agree with Vikx that it has been tinted. Showing my age here but my parents had an oak bedroom suite from that era that my mom called something.... white oak, maybe. When I first stepped in my trailer, that was I was reminded of instantly. The finish on the ash reminds of the finish on the bedroom suite so much. Apparently, it was a popular finish of the era. I agree that it was a popular finish at the time. White oak is what I used in the 57 Westerner to try to match the Ash. I'm going to use Birch for what I need in the Shasta which is very little. But this finish has me stumped. How do you tint shellac?

Ya good question. They don't even have a color pallet. I already looked at this stuff and in one of the tutorials I read about Shellac and it said not to use this stuff with alcohol based shellacs because it won't mix.... I don't believe them so I'm going to try it anyhow. Reason I don't believe what I read was because it was from Rustoleum Inc. and the lady I talked to there in the "Tech Support" dept. didn't have a clue.... Also, I could have gotten all the stuff I needed for this problem if I had looked for it before December of 2013. Seems that here in Kaliforniastan they have removed all these products from the stores that sold it because of the freaking EPA. They now only sell Shellac in quart size and none of the tints that used to be used. I hate my state and I should have stuck to my guns and never taken on another Shasta again. I am very disappointed. I need to go kill something now.

When I bought my first quart of amber shellac (Lowe's only sells it in quarts but sells the clear in gallons) the nice young man who worked there and ask if I needed help was very knowledgeable about refinishing wood. He suggested I go to Woodcraft and try some tints but all I had heard was amber, amber, amber and it sounded easy and looked good to me. If I ever do this again, I'll take a little more time with it and experiment.

OK Susie well I'm going to go ahead and call these people in the morning. I think I'm going to have them send me the 10 color kit and the color pallet. I bet this stuff works. They claim it mixes with all kinds of stuff including shellac. Couldn't hurt at this point. I gotta tell ya though. I always seem to have my worse problems with Shastas. Wonder if the company is cursed or something LOL..

Haha! Sometimes I feel my craftsmanship is a little inferior but then I remember the Shasta goofs I fixed, or find something else, and then I don't feel so bad.
Hey, did you ever get your cushions back?

Yes, the ones you had upholstered that had to be redone so they would fold.

He called last week and said he's going to have them ready in a week or two. This guy does airplanes and very expensive cars. He does super nice work. I think this was a first for him because he didn't know any better. The work was immaculate. They just wouldn't sit up LOL... So I'm still waiting but I'm a long way off from needing them so it's OK with me.

BUT that is what made them appeal to a vast amount of people, they could afford them.

OK! I have received the color chart from WoodCraft and have done my best to match it to the color of the ash paneling in the 59 Shasta. I have ordered Mixol #6 to tint the clear shellac with. So as soon as it gets here I will be doing some mixing and matching and basic experimenting. I'll show you my results as soon as I have them. Keep your fingers crossed because if this works, everyone with an Ash interior is going to want to match it.
Also... They have every color in the rainbow so just because Shasta used a very light yellow tint doesn't mean that YOU have to use the same. If you are into Aqua, you could to an Aqua tint... Or red... Or brown... You will still see the grain because this will be transparent. I just don't know how well this stuff is going to mix up yet so stand by all...
More to come.
Thanks again to SusieQ for searching this Mixol stuff out for me. The people at WoodCraft are very helpful.

Our Shasta has the same exact ash and had the yellowish stuff on it too but I have sanded most of it off. Just wondering how to get it to match up with the new birch. Hope you found a good alternate solution!

I just received the tint in the mail from Mixol. I think I will start testing over the weekend being that I'm going to be at home instead of going out there with all the crazy people. I'll do a video and hopefully have the results up by Monday.

Larry I am sure the nuts out there are grateful that you are staying off of their personal highways because in their opinion you have no right to be there. This is why they run over police and other emergency personal when they are out there trying to do their job. My grand dad used to stay he thought the world was going nuts and if he was alive today he would know it. I just arrived back home and as I came up the highway I watch a car make 15 unsafe lane changes with no signals one of which caused another car to go over on to the berm at 70+ mph to avoid him and he had gained about 200 yards on me in ten miles and I had never changed lanes. I hope he makes it where ever he is going and doesn't hurt or kill someone doing it.
