I want to replace the back frame gaskets on the HEHR push-outs in the front of the 57 Westerner. You know this kind of window. Solid glass in the middle and two over and under push-outs on each side. They are held in with some screw/nut combinations shown in the photos and I don't know where to get the bit or screw driver to remove them. Has anyone ever replaced these gaskets? As you can see, someone painted them with house paint and it's very hard to remove. I think it would be better to just replace if I can get the frames out.

Hey Larry, NAPA will have the bit for your screw drivers for those screws. I forgot what they are called by name but they are kinda shaped like bow ties. I got my two bits for them at NAPA but I'm sure other tool places might have them. They were kind of hard to find though. Lowes, Autozone, Advance, Fastenall, Farm & Fleet all didn't have them. Get one out with a smaller common slot screwdriver and take it with you on your trip to NAPA. I think 2 or 3 bits were less than $7.00 there.

I always seem to got those bits in the Christmas cheapo tool kits. Always were handy in the old mobile home I used to live in as there were screws with this head all over. Maybe Harbor Freight worth a look too.

Great! Thanks guys. Now how about the other question. Anyone ever replace these back frame gaskets before? Im wondering if I am going to be drilling out any rivets or if the screws I showed along with the ones under the gasket will release the frames so I can replace those gaskets.

Sorry Larry. I don't know about the gasket. (we are supposed to be learning from your mistakes so we don't have to make them ourselves!) I do know that the pic above that gonekayaking posted from NAPA is a Phillips bit. NAPA website has the wrong pic posted! See pic of bit and diagram of shape of tip;

Well I doubt I will ever retire from making the vids. I enjoy doing it and this is just another excuse to make one so get ready. Here we go... Hoping I can do this without removing the entire window but if I must I will.

Window assembly needs to be removed, then you will be able to see what your working on better. Make sure you pry off the two inside covers that go between the center and the small outer windows to gain access to the center screws/nuts. Make sure you replace the screens while you have it all apart. The only screen material you want to use is actual galvanized steel screen (or maybe copper or bronze if your bucks up, LOL). Fiberglass and aluminum screen will not work on the early windows. You can buy steel screen from VTS, or McMaster Carr.

Thanks John. I keep a few rolls of the VTS screen around at all times. I've just never disassembled one of these window sets. I've only replaced the center solid piece and it's gasket before. I wouldn't have to do any of this if the paint would come off the gaskets. That's what this is all about.

An actual clutch head screw driver will be shaped just like the hole in the screw head and like Phillips heads they come in different sizes. Three sizes if I remember right. They were a production screw very popular in the trailer industry.

Hi, My entire Wildcat was put together with those clutch head screws. I bought the last package of drivers available in South East Michigan last summer. An option I found by mistake is that the drill end of the grab extractor will remove them. (Lowe's) If you look close the end is almost the same butterfly shape as the clutch screw head. I bought the tool to use as intended, but found that when I tried to drill into the screw it came right out. Cheri
