So, not sure what to do. I wish I would have looked into this before disassembling the trailer.
Does anyone know of a website that will give me a value on a 1958 Camper? The DMV will accept a print out from Kelly, Nada, etc. but they don't list trailer's that old. I can't get a local trailer dealer to give me an appraisal because the trailer is in pieces. I can wait until it's reassembled and will hopefully be able to get one then, but of course after repairs it will be worth more than the $300 I paid for it. Any ideas on how I could get a written appraisal?

so, i just looked up the law and see that they wont. do you have a friend thats in the car business? it doesnt look like it specifies "trailer dealer" if you can get a "dealer" friend to write you one for $200 and buy them lunch. just show them before pictures, then they will have seen it. little off the wall but with no real true appraisers, may be the only way to go www.michigan.gov/sos/0,4670,7-127-49534_50300_50308-29797--,00.html www.michigan.gov/documents/tr-205_16198_7.pdfthere words speak it their self

Hhmmm, I do have a friend who's a car dealer.............. let me go check the paper they gave me, I know they said they had to be Michigan Certified.................You're RIGHT, it just says dealer!!!
GREAT IDEA pirateslife!! I'm going to email them and see what they say! Thanks so much for checking and looking at it with "fresh" eyes!
Sent the email.... we'll see what he says. He's been a dealer for a long time so he'll know if it'll fly! Thanks again for the idea.

I wouldn't email the state, just take them he paperwork they want. If they question it you are armed with it in their own words. Catch em off guard

Success, Michigan title on its way!!!!!
Here's the nuts and bolts.................If you need a Michigan Title,
1. Do Not disassemble the trailer!!!!! (wanna know how I know!) 2. Get an appraisal, they want to make sure they get their share. They will accept a Kelly Blue book or NADA print out, but if it's vintage you'll probably find out you can't get a value from any online site. Otherwise it must be from a licensed dealer (car, RV, they didn't ask). It must be worth less than $2500.00 3. Get it weighed. 4. Take Bill of Sale, appraisal, Vin #, Weight to SOS office, fill out their little yellow paper. 5. Wait the half hour for them to check to see if it's stolen or titled in a different state. 6. Pay your one time registration fee, license fee, and taxes. (My total $114) WA-Lah..................

I think this should be posted in its own thread for Michigan Title.

I just titled a 58 camper in MI.. I had a bill of sale from the guy I bought it from who didn't have a title. He thought it was a 55, so marked the bill of sale with 55.
Sent my wife in there with an old trailer reg that the previous owner gave me for some random trailer he had. My wife told the lady it was a certain brand and name. Lady at Sec of State told her to find the numbers on the trailer and have it weighed.
I went and weighed it, and found the numbers... Sent my wife with the weight slip, and some good pics on her phone of the numbers. They looked it up (did the hour search) and sent her on her way with a title and registration with a Permanent tag for like 124 bucks.

I'm glad I live in Michigan, I just bought a 1961 Shasta Compact with no title or registration. I printed out the MI bill of sale, and now I need to go get it weighed. I was just planning on registering it with out a title since you don't need one for light weight campers in MI. But what are the benefits to me getting a title? if I only need to do one more step (the appraisal) then I will definitely consider it.

Titles are important if you ever go to sell the trailer. Plans may be to keep it forever but... If you can get a title, I would do it. It proves you own the trailer.
