I have been having a hard time finding replacement cone lamps for the back couch area of my trailer. Every time they come up on ebay there is a feeding frenzy are they go really fast for a high price. So it has occurred to me that I could just buy a mid century pole lamp which sell for a much more reasonable price and take the lamps off of it, and add a new back plate to each one and I would have the equivalent of the original wall lamp. has anyone ever done this before? Is there any reason it couldn't work in a camper?

Why not? They are just light fixtures. If you could come up with a nice base it would be fine.
If you find some with wear, "Hammertone" paint comes in five or six different color shades and will cover a multitude of problems, and still looks vintage. Spray a light "tack coat" wait tens minutes and follow with a heavy coat of paint for the raised look.

Sure, why not? I remember a three-light pole lamp we had when I was a kid, that had stringy green fiberglass shades on it, they all faded and cracked.

Seems like a shame to be wasteful.
Buy the light pole, use the "repurposed" light fixtures on your wall, and mount the "dancing pole" in the middle of the trailer for those wild campfire parties! LOL

There is a pole with black cones I am looking at for $35, so I would have to spray them cream.. but the price is right.. I think I am going to throw caution to the wind and dive in to the experiment. I will post photos of the "mutant lamp babies" I create.

I did something similar, with a clamp-on reading/desk lamp, using the original bases from the trailer. The fiberglass globes were gone and the PO used clip-on shades... The hard part was the wiring on the modern lights was heavier than the orig, and had a little trouble pushing it through the tubes to the underside.

The fiberglass cone shades on ours were really rough and would tear ya up. We also had one with cones made of a sea-bluish plastic that turned yellow and cracked to pieces.

Time for an ebay rant... once again just before I was about to win the lamp, whith me being the only bidder and no action on it for days, a "mystery" bidder suddenly bid fifty cents more than me and I lost it. I am very suspicious when this happens that it is the seller doing this so that they dont have to sell it at a lower price than they want.. sigh.. still looking for a pole lamp

Drat. I hate when that happens. Sorry, LadyW.
By the way, I've built lots of lamps from old parts and some new. Anything the right shape can be made to work...

One thing that I am not clear on here, Ladywendolyn, is if you have any parts at all from the original lamps in the camper? If you have the bases for the lights and are missing the socket, shade, etc, replacing those parts is fairly easy...unless you shop ebay for them...!

I have 2 light fixtures, each with 2 brass colored (I believe anodized aluminum) cones. Can you use them or are you looking for plastic??? You can have them for nothing.. just pay shipping. Let me know if you are interested. PM me your email and I will send a few pics. Good luck!

The metal ones sound cool! They won't melt/get brittle either...
