As you may know if you have followed my rebuild, I am nearing the painting stage of this project. My wife and I have been "discussing" the colors we would prefer. After much "discussion" we have essentially stalled on a white upper with a red lower and a dark red Shasta stripe. Now the question, does anyone know of a red and white color combination from this year of Shasta? I know, I know, just do what feels good and don't worry about the purists. Well, it is true, I have varied some in the process of restoration but not a lot and my thinking is that I would really like to have something close to an original color combination. Thoughts?

Well, I won't bother saying it's yours do what you want, but..... www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfR7qxtgCgYThe Shasta plants offered your choice of custom mixed colors too. So even back then they would have them painted how they wanted them when ordering. I have a copy of an ad about this somewhere and will dig it up again and post here for this site. I always thought our 63 Compact had a pastel yellow on top of metallic green with polished stripe. Many told me it was just the white aged. Well IMHO white aged = chalk powder but very white or fades back to bare aluminum. When stripping the paint off the wheels (Hadn't discovered soda blasting yet) the last few layers of paint went like this; Steel wheel, black primer, yellow, white, silver, white, rust! So here are pics of what I saw and as usual the project talked to me and told me what to do. The other side of me wants to bust out 3 or 4 bright iridescent metallic hot rod colors, my air brush, and my squirrel hair pin stripe brushes! Maybe this thread here will help; vintagetrailertalk.freeforums.net/thread/144/exterior-paint-ideas-camper-stuffDo what floats yer boat, or more importantly, what floats yer mate’s boat! I haven't found any paint chip charts for Shasta manufacturing..YET. Untill I do I guess I'll keep picking colors from vintage MOPAR chip sheets due to that's what I have on hand. I'm repairing a 71 Wildcat right now that I will be painting with rustoleium or tractor/equipment paint. Just following manufacturers instructions for mixing/spraying. Well, at least I've got the frame and rims done so far LOL In the background of last pic below is my car hauler. It has your local "Farm/Fleet" stores tractor/equipment paint on it. Gloss white and gloss "IH Red". You can buy it in spray cans, pints, quarts, gallons, and it is real forgiving for the weekend painter at a good price. Good Luck and have fun. Soup

We almost painted hamlet a darkish red with the off-white above. Decided it might clash with our red tow vehicle, so we did blue instead. I like the fact that the company would paint it in your color.

In contemplating the colors we wanted, we took a look at the various colors on the original skin. We found an aqua color along with a pinkish color and of course white. None of them "floated our boat" so it was off to the chip charts. Since my tow truck is white, we won't have to worry about a clash of colors. I really think we are going with some variation of red and a white or off white top. Not sure of the Z stripe yet. Thanks soup for the chuckle. I am considering having the shop also put a variation of the Shasta Z stipe, in whatever color we choose, on the side of my tow truck.

Did the original Shasta have a painted stripe or was it polished aluminum? Do most people paint the stripe today?

It was originally polished aluminum. Easier then than now as back then, the original aluminum was just plain. Nowadays, most aluminum comes with a "primer' coat (that just happens to be almost exactly the color of the original white), so rather than strip that off, folks will paint it. That's what we did with Hamlet. I think it's probably 70-30 polish to paint for those who are using the original skin.

I am still contemplating the stripe. My replacement skin is aluminum and might be a nice fit for just polishing, I will see

I painted my stipe metallic silver thinking it would be easier to maintain. A few years down the road when the aluminum starts to oxidize again it would be tough to polish the metal without messing up the paint.

Great thread! I was searching for original Shasta Compact colors before asking and this thread came up in my search. My SC was originally the pink(salmon) and white color (with the Z strip, of course.) I'm not much of pink girl, it doesn't look good on me, so I'm not sure I want to dress my SC in it. And yet, I'm struggling with how true I want to an authentic restoration. In the end, paint it the colors that please YOU. We went back and forth and finally decided on a color that we liked, that is close to original color but we were coordinating it with aqua/yellow interior so we went with a slightly turquoise powder blue.

Well after all the discussion this is what we ended up with. And we both love it. As you will note (or not) the lower half is slightly lower than the original stripe. We also opted for a grey stripe as opposed to a dark red thinking it would break it up better and I agree. I am only showing one view as I showed the whole trailer in another thread.

Soup's right, the "white" gets a lot less white when you polish the chalk off it.
That thing is gorgeous.

Looks great! Would you mind telling me if you painted it yourself or had it painted by a pro and if so what was the cost?
