I guess our trailer is a little therapy. It's probably the only hobby my wife and I have done together. We are different in many ways. I love cold weather, dirt bikes, salt water aquariums, high end sq car audio and fly fishing. She loves her job (teaching), 100 degree days, floating in the pool and face book. But with our old junky shasta we have found common ground.

My trailers are my hobby and keep me busy. I don't camp but stay home and fix them. Once a year, I visit our big Fall Rally....
I have my favorites; mainly 50s canned hams. There's 3 that I plan on enjoying for a while, a 57 Shasta, the 53 Hanson and a 54 Bellwood. Very cool little trailers, the only one that needs work is the 57.

This is a pretty old thread and since it's inception my hobby has turned into sort of a job. I'm finishing up my last two full restores for other people and am hoping that I don't have to do any more so that I can concentrate on my own trailers. But I am building a clientele of students for my on line school of vintage trailer restoring. So I've crossed over the line because I can't live on my SS only. But it has greatly increased my participation in the hobby as well as supplementing my income so that I can afford to own my own shop and property. I'm now happier than I have ever been in my life. Do I consider this prostituting my hobby? Not really. I think my time is worth the very small amount of money I charge and if it supports my hobby and me then why not?

We had a few campers when I was a kid, we camped some, 1 - a Starcraft pop up, we never even used; but from our first vacation in a little Lark, I've loved campers. As an adult I got back into camping and my husband and I have had a couple campers permanently parked in RV parks. A few years back we gave up the 40' camper for a cottage. Then... my husband found an article of how a couple transformed a canned ham into a playhouse and that set the wheels in motion. We started the hunt not even realizing what we were doing and found the Vette. The plan had been to patch it up for a playhouse for our daughter. But as luck would have it, he couldn't fathom the idea of painting or patching rot and I found this forum. The truth is, if I hadn't come across all of you wonderful, helpful, and addicted people, I'd probably have a shabby little trailer in my backyard. It's definitely a hobby, hoping to end up with a camper to camp in during retirement, but with that said, I have already found another.

Since I first started this thread, I've realized there is one other category besides a job or a hobby ... there is "Full blown, vintage trailer addiction"! Lol

LadyW, I don't 'camp'. I visit the rally once a day and then come home... Take lots of photos and chat the day away. We take our electric scooters that are so much fun. (inherited mine when the guy fell off and needed a 4 wheeler) I've had kids from 13 to 90 riding that thing around the grounds. They love it.

I border between addiction and hobby. I have many hobbies (I read somewhere that it's a Gemini trait... so I'll blame it on that). I work a full 40 desk job, I do photography and bartend and teach photography and bartending at my local school for adult ed, and those two hobbies pay for my trailer addiction/hobby... which just costs me money. I think it all balances out in the end, or at least I tell myself that.

I restored my Shasta, based on I am a hobbyist. I usually restore old cars; my last one was a 1967 Mercury Cougar and now working on a 1951 Chevy 2 door sedan. I wanted to try something different and try out camping (wasn't a camper prior to this). The wife had 2 requirements; must have a bathroom and AC. So, finding a self contained Shasta took me less than a year, gutted most of it and now have something we use. I am justifying keeping it by using it at least 5 times a year starting last year. 1 trip planned in September and the last one in October!
I have a daytime job but working with my hands in the garage is what keeps me sane! TJ
