Greetings everybody, I'm new to trailers, camping and forum posting so I hope I don't step on too many toes here. I am considering buying a 1951 Anderson 31 foot trailer. I have not seen the trailer in person because it is in another city but I do have pictures that I am going to try and post here. I am reasonably handy but not a pro by any means. I do have a large area where the trailer can be stored during renovation. The trailer is going to be used as housing at a summer camp for adult volunteers. We are hoping that if we can create a cool retro accommodation we'll keep our volunteers happy. The pictures show some rot in the ceiling, walls and floor. I've discovered Mobiltec on youtube and watched his Deville restoration which totally freaks me out because of the size of this trailer. I'm not sure if we have the time, finances etc. to pull this off. Any help would be appreciated. The owner wants $2500 for the trailer and right now there is no water tank so I don't think that the plumbing can be checked and the fusebox looks out of commission as well. Am I nuts or is this something that makes sense to get into? I have uploaded an album to Photobucket which can be accessed here. I'll try to embed some of the more important pictures below:

I can't answer whether that is too big of a project for you take on; I just want to say that is a cool trailer and would make an AWESOME housing facility for your volunteers if you succeed.

Welcome, Ed. Let me address at least one of your questions...yes, you are likely nuts. That's how you found us - we all suffer from the same thing. Don't fool yourself - that's a project for sure - and as much work as you are thinking it is, it's going to be more. You should consider making a trip to see it or enlist one of our members here to take a peek if someone is in the area. But what a beautiful trailer it would be! Good luck with your decision - you'll find lots of people willing to help with their knowledge and support. Barbara

It's a very cool trailer. The skin looks great. I bet almost everyone on this forum would like to spend the summer living in it. I would, especially if it's parked next to a trout stream!
I'm in my first trailer rescue, a very small trailer. From my limited experience three questions come to mind:
1) do you have a full-time job doing something other than reworking that trailer?
2) do you have as much money to rework it as it would cost to buy it?
3) do you need it _this_ summer?

I just gave away a 51 Anderson to get it off the property last summer. If I had known you wanted one I could have given it to you. I don't see more than a couple hundred for something like that unless it was in really nice condition. The one I gave away is now being used for storage. Once he got into it he said it was way more rotten than any of us thought.
LOL "Totally freaks me out" didn't know I had that affect on my viewers...

I love love love those clerestory windows, it could be a beautiful trailer, but I see a lot of work here. Assuming you put the months of sweat equity and $ in to fix this up, my question for you would be how do you want to use a 31 ft trailer? It's a big trailer (in my mind) to tow around to weekend rallies or camping. And with gas prices only going up....how far are you going to want to take this? Or do you have a nice piece of property to put this on as a vacation cabin?
At some point, I will definitely be in the market for a long trailer like this to fix up for a piece of land by a river somewhere. but not for towing around to go camping. just my 2 cents.

I can testify to the fact that they tow exceptionally well. I was very surprised at that part. This trailer is going to need a lot of work from what I can see in the photos. If the Deville scared you, this will be a nightmare I'm afraid.

I got the impression from his post that this trailer wasn't going to be moved much, if at all - but rather a place for volunteers to hang out in. I could be wrong.

Yes the plan is to find a large vintage trailer that is going to be kept on site. The summer camp was established in the 1950s so it would be cool to have something from that era that can be used to house adult volunteers. If this trailer looks like it needs tons of work does anybody have a lead or a suggestion on where we can pick up a larger vintage trailer that has a similar look? The camp is in Kelowna British Columbia.

You might want to start a search for a Spartan. The Manor and the Mansion are two very good trailers and they can both be restored from the inside.. No need to take the outside metal off. They have huge windows in the front so lot's of light and very roomy inside. There will be a lot more of them out there for sale than the Andersons. Here's one I sold for $1500.
It doesn't have the bread loaf shape but it is unique....

Hi Ed, I'm new to the vintage trailer club too, so I don't have the restoration experience that others do.
How are you planning to use the trailer? Which parts of it do you need to work? Is it going to be for sleeping in? Or more like a "lounge" spot for your volunteers to hang out in? How much of it needs to be operational? Do you need the shower to work? The toilet? Or is there somewhere else nearby in camp the would work of the shower and bathroom? Do you need the stove to work? How about the oven? Would it ever even be used? Or could it just be in there for "looks" Would a hot plate and a microwave work instead? Maybe you just need the kitchen sink to work. Maybe if you aren't going to be doing allot of dishes you don't even need the sink to work… Maybe just a hose bib outside the door will be enough… Maybe a BBQ grill outside the door would help substitute for the kitchen stove…
I think if you make a list like this for yourself you may find out that you don't need a "Full Restoration" that you can leave the charm of the Trailer in there, spruce it up a bit, and save yourself some time…
I think this idea is really COOL and that your Volunteers will LOVE it and will be willing to jump in and help you too!
I know you have come to the right place to ask questions and you have a Fantastic Idea… You are off to a great start! I'm wishing you the Best of Luck!

You bring up good points about what needs to work and what doesn't. I think that in the end the goal would be to have a fully functioning trailer but just sprucing it up in the short term might work well.

Ed, Yes think of it in stages and smaller goals and you all will get her done! It doesn't have to be perfect to be enjoyed!
I have to say I really like the looks of that Anderson trailer, very cool! And I like that "Expando Snack Bar" mentioned on the advertisement page and shown in your photos! That feature is really Nifty!
If you get this one remember to keep taking lots of pictures for your records so that you can see your progress!
Wishing you Lots of Pleasure and Enjoyment!
