Welcome to the forum... I'm working on a 59... You'll get all the help you need here. She looks like she's actually in pretty good shape! That rear panel under the window needs to go but there's a lot of good looking wood in there. Yeah, that's our big project this year is that rear panel. But no complaints here, we are pretty lucky with how well she was taking care off. |

Gorgeous Airflyte! I'm super-jealous about the pristine condition. I'm a 46 year old of two boys (22 and 29) and will be doing most of my reno solo as my husband has NO desire to take part... yet.  Congratulations on a great find! |

Theresa: One way to hook hubby into the craziness is not to talk too much about the cushions, curtains, dishes, pillows, etc. Stick to the basics and soon (we hope), he'll be chiming in with his thoughts on a color scheme as well. Years ago, when I wanted to redo our back yard (and my husband wouldn't even talk about it), a friend told me to find a picture of what I wanted it to look like on the fridge and after a month, he'd think it was his idea. Well, it didn't work out exactly that way, but I wound up with a beautiful outdoor living space that we used almost daily until we moved. So find a pic of that pristine trailer and post it. He'll catch the bug, too. |

His worries aren't that I talk too much about the girly stuff, his worry is that I'm going to tear it all apart in the middle of the driveway and leave him to clean up the mess! haha No worries though, I'm in this for the long haul and maybe my commitment to it will be inspiring  |

Ask your husband questions like:
What kind of paint should we use (not what color)?
Do you have a spray gun and a compressor?
Do we have a Kreg jig?
That should do it. And please, take plenty of pictures of stuff as it comes apart!

HAHA, It goes like this in my house Yas: "I'd like to use red implement paint, because it's cheaper, but I prefer the turquoise, so I might pay the extra and get Sherwin Williams."
And (this happened just the other day)...
Me (texting him on my cell from Lowes) "Look at the new compressor I just bought, way bigger than the pancake one we have now. And they can't find the K4MS Kreg Jig I want so I've ordered it and they'll ship it to me"

None of those strategies work with my hubby. He's a CPA and a numbers guy. He does NOT enjoy tools or working with his hands. I'm the tool junkie in our family. Getting the Kreg pocket hole jig made me happy for weeks! |

Hi Sarah....we just bought a 61 and some stuff was already stripped out of her....glad to know the subtytle may be the same "Airflyte". Now I have a bed question for you. We have a partial frame exposed that has a middle fold down door and both the left and right cargo outside doors open to that same rectangular under bed compartment. Do you have sliding bed boards to bring the bed out all the way over the wheel wells and thus hiding the interior door that folds down? Or did you build supports inside the original box and just make the compartment accessable only from those outside doors. WHat kind of matress is that bed? Also that looks to be another frig. not the original ice box? Is it wired on that side since we have no wires on that side at all. Do you have any water tanks anywhere we never have discovered a single one?  Thanks 61shastagal |

Hi 61shastagal, I'm on both sides of you, with 1959 and 1961 Airflyte's. The original water tank was installed under the dinette seat on the street side and was fabricated of steel. They were prone to rusting and leaks. If you want an original, leaks and all, I will ship one to you. LOL! I have replaced mine with tanks of the same size that I had made at a company in Tustin, Ca. The cost was $80.00 as I recall. They are made of a plastic material and they come with all necessary inlets and outlets. I don't remember the name of the company, but will look thru my files and send it to you.
The bed and storage compartment is another interesting situation. As you already know, the bed frame is not high enough and when the exterior storage compartment door is opened it exposes the bed frame and the mattress. You can rectify this by raising the height of the bed frame and the the small boxed in area that is at aft portion of the wheel well. The bed frame has two thin sheets of plywood over the support slats and to open up the bed the top sheet slides forward and rests on the aft wheel well boxes. The original mattress is in three sections and serves as a sofa until bed time. When you are ready to make up the bed, you slide out the top panel and pull the mattress forward. The part that was the sofa backrest will unfold and lay flat and you now have a bed. The interior storage door is not easily accessible when the bed is made up. Hope this makes sense and answers your questions. Gary
