Hi Everyone,
We are beginning to pull up the linoleum that is down in our 65 Vacationaire. As we starting pulling up the sheet linoleum, the paper backing is not coming up with it. Can I use something like you use to remove wallpaper paper backing such as DIF to help bring up the paper that is not coming up with the linoleum? Would it help to score the area with an item such as a Paper Tiger too?
Thanks in advance.
Martha

Good luck! They really knew how to make glue back then. I ended up using a wire cup brush on a grinder with a respirator. If I had known how easy the floor was to replace Ida cut it all out linoleum and all

I'd start with a good quality heat gun. Get it hot and it will help the glue release. The larger of the piece that comes off, the better it is for you. Remember that a lot of flooring had asbestos in it back in the day. I'd avoid grinding and using a wire cup brush if possible, since you never know what you have to remove.

Thus the reason for a respirator, not just a dust mask. It was my last resort after a razor scraper for floors, heat gun failed me. I agree to avoiding it if possible since with a respirator you need to know how to use it besides just putting it on.

I have noticed that scoring and a little water sprayed on from a hand spray bottle helps release some of the glues used back then too. Try the DIF and paper tiger first in a small area with a putty knife to see if it works. If you notice in the old trailers the stuff is usually lifted already where water has been.

Thanks everyone. We have been working with a heat gun and that isn't lifting the paper/adhesive but we did try a little area last night with some water in a spray bottle and at least it is moving a bit. I am in charge (alone) this weekend to work on it (bf will be on a snowboard trip) so I think I'll pick up some DIF to see if it helps.
All of your knowledge and experience is so helpful.

Please try this and then let me know what happens.
Lay down a couple of layers of newspaper. Then spray the newspaper with water until it is all damp. Don't get it so wet that you have sitting puddles. Just make sure all the newspaper is very damp. Let it set over night. Then go back the next day and pick up the news paper and start scraping up what's left with a wide putty knife or a drywall blade. The black stuff should just scoop up like soft putty.
Let me know if that works for you. You can try it in a small 3 sq foot area first if you like.

Let me know if that works for you. You can try it in a small 3 sq foot area first if you like. Update: Larry this worked really well. We laid down the paper and sprayed it pretty damp but no puddles and as long as you didn't leave it too long (i.e. 24 hours) then it was very workable. Leaving it 24 hours just had everything dry up even in a coldish garage. But 8 hours-ish was very helpful.
Now to get to work on it.
