Yep Larry, I went against all odds when I purchased Chucks Waggin. The PO didn't have a title and didn't know of one, he bought it for a storage shed many years ago and never gave a title any thought. Before I purchased it I went to the Department of Licensing and did some research so I was sure I could acquire a title so I could license it when complete. However, before proceeding I sent a "Vehicle/Vessel Information Disclosure Request" into Olympia along with the signed and dated Bill of Sale. That could have come back in one of two ways: 1) No record of this VIN number on file or 2) A listing of the last person who registered this unit. I was fortunate and mine came back with no record of this VIN number on file. Next step was to have the vehicle weighed at a certified scale and then a trip to the local Washington State Patrol inspection station. Last step was to take all of the paperwork to the Department of Licensing and apply for a Title in Suspense which means a formal Title will not be issued for 3 years but the unit is registered and licensed in my name. So here she is: Total cost $140.65 Now, had the disclosure request came back with the unit being registered in someone name, I would have had send that person a "Release of Interest Form" by registered mail. If the letter is returned unopened I would take the unopened letter along with the completed inspection form and Bill of Sale and they would have issued my license plates, tabs and registration but again, no title for 3 years. If the receipt comes back I would have had to wait 15 days from the date of the receipt then take the paperwork in for the registration, tabs and plates.

So, the bottom line is, in Washington State, you can purchase a trailer without a title if you are willing to jump through the hoops to acquire one. I would strongly suggest though that if you do, you go to the County Auditors office for the required paperwork so you have it up front. AND send in the Vehicle/Vessel Information Disclosure request before starting any work on it. That way you at least know what you are dealing with. Also, the inspection process, at least in South central Washington, has a huge backlog. I made my inspection appointment the first of January and couldn't get an appointment until February 13th. There are 2 stations near where I live, Yakima and Kennewick. Yakima was March 18th and Kennewick was February 13th.

Thanks 61, good Wa State info here. I've been thru it myself, a pain, but do-able. Have a 65 Mobile Scout that is looking like it needs the same process and well as my older (trashed) 52 Hanson...

I just bought a 1960 Trotwood and can't find a VIN. Do I go through the same process? (I'm in Wa State as well)

I can't answer that question vintagenewbie. I would suggest you go to your local DMV and ask that question. Sorry

Thanks for replying. Turns out the serial # is the VIN. Back to the DOL to check it out.
