We're going to go look at a 69 Comet and are wondering if there are words of wisdom on this year/make that any one wants to share? Anybody have one of these? Or work on one? Thanks in advance!

Hi Dawn, It isn't really the brand of trailer but condition that matters. And Title, of course. Water marks are a sign of damage to the structure. Check underneath. Do all the windows work? The entry door? Soft floor?
My rules when on the Hunt: 1. 1969 and older, less than 16 feet, single axle 2. Towable now 3. CLEAR TITLE 4. Original parts, pieces and appliances
Of course I don't mind if it needs a lot of work, just want it to be workable. They ALL need work, keep that in mind.

Thanks, Vikz. It's a single axle but he says it's about 20ft. That's bigger than I prefer as I like the smaller canned hams. But I'm wondering if you have a an additional reason beyond asthetics for limiting your hunt to 16'? He says it's single family owned and has been stored in a carport for 22 years. He just took in trade for work but his wife isn't interested in it.

They tow better, as they are designed for a single axle frame. Also, they are sought after for true canned ham shape with golden glow interior. I admit to being prejudiced, they are what I like. If a bigger trailer is what you want, go for it. You will need a more capable tow vehicle.

Faster resale with 16 foot and under. But if you got the beef to tow it with, not worried about resale and want comfort why not 20' and more? IMHO.

Thanks as always for the input. Soup, we have a couple trucks (construction workers!) and a pathfinder so towing is not a problem. Due to the ridiculous winter we've had we haven't been able to work on our "West" so I've started a new hunt trying to find something we can use til we have time and warm weather to rebuild I it. But it's darn hard to find anything at all let alone what might be a first choice. However after seeing Drakes fantastic find (even tho his is quite a bit more vintage than this 69) I'm thinking that maybe it wouldn't be so bad to pull a bigger clunkier trailer. We travel with a 90 lb German Shepherd so maybe we'll find the extra space welcome.

Well we went out literally to the middle of the plains of Kansas and looked at the 69 Comet. It was rectangular in shape and the interior had absolutely no charm. I would have been able to give it a pass on that and happily camped in it for a year while we restored our little one but it was not in the perfect condition promised by the owner. We weren't expecting perfection of course, but it had a lot of rot. All across the front and all around the door. The cushions were missing. The layout wasted too much space on the kitchen and shortchanged the bed area at the rear leaving only twin bunks. The bathroom was cool though, very clever and efficient use of a really small space. We're back to the drawing board on planning next steps for Roly Poly.

Even though it was an unfruitful trip to the middle of nowhere, I'm sure the experinence was worth it and you received more of an education than first realized. You will find the "one" or even better yet it will find you.
