One of my viewers just want's to do a little touching up to her barn find. Like polishing the stripe. She wants to know if painting her will lower the value or raise it. I told her there are different schools of thought on that. This is a 59 Shasta in all original condition which spent the last 17 years as part of a collection. Does anyone have an educated opinion about whether or not a paint job will raise or lower the value of this trailer? I think it will raise the value but there are those purists out there. But this paint job is a little worn out especially on top.
What do you folks think?

Nice. Is that an original screen door? I like the slide in it. And finally a pic of an original screen door latch, the piece on the screen door that catches on the ext. door. Thanks for posting.

Leave the purist B.S. to the Airstream folks. Anybody who has been around canned hams for any length of time realizes that they all need work and a fully sealed and shiny unit is worth more than one with a old faded paint job and dry seals. People new in the hobby don't realized this and all "barn find" trailers are going to need new seals and doing that will damage the paint.
Fix it, paint it and enjoy it
Just my two cents.

Times two. The fact that it has not leaked does not mean it won't...unless it is going to continue to live in a barn. Not that that is a bad idea....but the windows, doors, vents, etc. etc. etc. should all be resealed, and while it is apart it can be properly prepped and painted....... I would not hesitate a bit to put a GOOD paint job on it....Keeping the striping close to original and all is fine, but a nice fresh paint job done correctly is going to make that look like it is new again. So far as the question of "value" goes...it is hard to imagine a lessened value after several hundred dollars worth of paint work....
Just two more cents' worth....

This is very similar to Sundance. We polished and waxed the original sides and re-puttied the edge trim. The back had to be painted because the hauler put some dents in it. The trailer went from this: to this: The roof was also painted. I don't think new paint will hurt the trailer, they all need work. The edge trim has to be done anyway.

If your going to try and save the original paint, make sure you tape off the aluminum stripe before you polish it.

Curious as to why on the stripe tape John? I *think* we didn't...
Thanks SusieQ. The original paint came out really nice. Matching it for the butt paint was the hard part. It's really "lime" rather than lemon yellow, very hard to match.

GOSH! What a barn find! Must have been a pretty clean dry barn.

I remember this trailer. It was sold on ebay in November. The original owner supposedly only used it 3 times and then it was bought by a collector and held in a barn for 15 years before someone bought it and put it on ebay. The original listing said minor water damage and that the windows had been resealed, if I remember correctly. At the time, I sent the photos to Vikx.
It's a nice trailer, for sure.

You've convinced us - we're going to try and save the original paint on our AirFlyte. If it doesn't work out, we can always paint it later.

I am the happy new owner of this "barn find". I have decided to paint it, but I love what vikx wound up with on Sundance. If I hadn't had to take the skin off (yes, there was rot in the framing, surprise, surprise)I would have just polished it. But I am now done re-framing and am starting to put her all back together. It has been a fun odyssey, that's for sure! Her name is Lucille and my husband and I took her on a 3,000 mile journey right after purchasing her. She towed beautifully and the interior is pristine. The rot was such that she probably could have rolled another good long number of miles, but I have the time and the inclination right now to do a complete skin-off restoration, so that's what she's getting. The only boo boo I've made so far is washing and waxing the original floors, which were in great shape, just grimy. I'm not sure what happened, but the tile started curling at the corners. Sad. Although, I was going to remove the floor furnace anyway, so I would have had to do something there in any case. I am absolutely grateful to all of you on this board, and especially to mobiltec for his videos(!!). Without both of these resources, I would not have tackled this project. Thanks for being here!
