Here is another scam for you to watch. This same set of photos and ad has turned up with this phone number three different times I have looked since last night...Buffalo, NY, Rochester, NY, and Philadelphia...all on craigslist. philadelphia.craigslist.org/rvs/4317300918.html Scamp 13 Camper 2008 - $2400 AD COPY: The Camper is in good condition, clean, and in good working order. The RV living area has light wear since 2008, exterior is in very good condition, the interior of the cab has wear.979-987-7459 Believe me that model Scamp fiberglass has not ever sold for that price, at least not while it is recognizable as a camper...Whenever these ads start to turn up in multiples of locations, and have no local area code even for the phone....S-C-A-M.

If you buy from Craigslist, well you're taking your chances in person, but if you survive, you do have a chance to look at it first. If you buy from eBay, you may bid crazy and pay too much but if you know what you're doing, there are things to look for that make the purchase safer. First of all, check the seller's record. If they've sold hundreds of items and have a good rating, that's a good sign that they are legit. Also, you have a set time to pay either the deposit/down payment or the entire amount. If you are close, it should be enough time to allow you to actually look at the trailer before paying the entire price. Also, if you pay through eBay, you may be covered by the Buyer's Protection Plan. If so, it will be noted in the ad.

The title thing sounds like bad news too I've been playing phonetag with the owner to try and find out more...however I have a feeling with all these snowstorms we've been getting in NJ I probably won't be seeing the trailer in time anyway (maybe a sign?) I don't think buying off eBay is an option I'll use...I am watching a lot of items just to see how much they're going for and to get an idea of what's out there.

The first part is about metal skin but the second part is about finding trailers. I find mine in people's yards. Not on CL or Ebay.

Also beware the Scotty; they can be difficult for a newbie. The walls are plywood and can't be pieced, so that the trailer must be a frame up build. The frames can be cracked as well, check very closely underneath if you go see....

I didn't know that about Scotty's. The longer my search continues the less picky we are about condition. We're more willing to do more work on a trailer now than when we first started. I guess if you're going to get wet you might as well go swimming. So I've lowered my budget for the purchase (unless I find something spectacular) so we have more money for renovation. And given some horror stories I've read about people buying trailers and discovering issues, then we'll have some cash to deal with that.
And now I'm spotting scams everywhere haha. It's terrible people do that!

If you buy one "as is" and do the repair/restoration yourself then you know exactly what you have in the end. And you'll also find out that the restoration becomes an obsession. It's a crazy adrenaline rush, lol. I was hoping to find something campable when I started my search but I settled for a restoration project and everyone thought I had lost my mind. I couldn't be happier, so far.
