Everyone is getting busy. Mandi I will be bringing a large jack with me so don't worry about it until I get there.

Hey Mandi,
What grit did you use for sanding? Did you just hand sand with a sanding block? Did you consider using denatured alchohol to remove the old shellac or just sand away?
I have two trailers. One a 1963, and that the shellac is flaking off in most of the trailer. You can rub your hand along the surface and it just comes off like a powder. In another trailer from the late 50s, the shellac is not flaking.
What was the surface like on your surfaces before you started sanding?
thanks
Rod

We scraped the flakey shellac with a plane blade, then sanded. I learned the hard way that any white or light spots showed badly thru clear shellac. (57 Deluxe) With amber, they are well hidden.

Yep. The scraper is the way to go first. Then sand. Anything left in the grains you will be able to see with shellac.

I used 80 grit. It was painted so I had that to get off. I didn't know(/remember) Larry's rec for a scraper. I'll be doing that next time. Everything in there was painted except the inside of the various doors and cabinet's. I'm going to sand those down and Tung oil polish them. The paint scheme that the PO's did was really lovely, so I'll be going with that again although I'll actually clear shellac them so they don't scuff in 30 seconds again. Their sealing and damage repairs, however, were... not lovely.

Oops... I did it again.... How many people get to do two of these? Yep. I just bought this as a birthday present to myself. It's a 1948 Mainline Silver Lark. It's the little brother of the Silver Lodger that I did. This one is a 14 footer. Other than being a bit shorter, it's pretty much the same as the other one. I'll be picking it up next week.
